Cinco de Mayo

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! - Happy May 5th!

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the battle of Puebla in Puebla, Mexico where the Mexican army defeated the French. The Mexicans were very outnumbered and had older weapons but they still prevailed. It invigorated the people to fight against other invading countries. It is a celebration of the “underdog”.

There are parades, reenactments of the battle, and carnivals celebrated mostly around the Puebla area. Ironically, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than in Mexico.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo we learn about the holiday and we dance the Jarabe Tapatío (Mexican Hat Dance).
