Cap & Gown
Cap & Gown
Allowed & Not Allowed pics and descriptions on how to wear
your cap, gown, CHS stole, NHS stole, and Honor Cords.
General rules:
Cords and stoles worn at the graduation ceremony may only come from Chamblee HS official organizations and clubs. A small number of pre-approved outside organizations like Scouts, Girls Scouts, and the US Military are also allowed. Ask Ms. Miller or Ms. Peyton by February if you are seeking additional approval.
No Custom cords or sashes are allowed at graduation. If you have those, feel free to use them at your private graduation celebrations.
Decorations on your cap or gown and clothing under your cap & gown. See below. We don't want you to be sad and upset on the day of graduation.
If you throw your cap at graduation, it will not be returned to you. Throwing your cap up into the air at graduation may be fun and exciting, but it is equivalent to throwing it in the trash. You will NOT get it back. You will NOT get a refund. You wore it on your head and threw it onto the dirty ground. Staff will pick up the discarded caps and throw them into the garbage for sanitary purposes. Students may also not leave their seating spot or their line to retrieve their caps themselves. This movement is disruptive and it is also unsanitary. We HIGHLY ENCOURAGE students to do the cap wave, which we review in graduation practice.
Three of these graduates are dressed for a CHS graduation while two are not. The three people with the green checks are properly attired in their blue cap, blue gown, and white V-neck stole with gold honors cords authorized by the school. The person with the gold stole is not dressed properly for a CHS graduation. Neither of the people with the red check are wearing their cap on their heads.
NONE of these graduates are dressed properly for a CHS Graduation because none of them are wearing the CHS-issued white stole. The v-Neck stole is part of the graduation outfit and must be worn.
National Honors Society graduates wear their CHS-issued blue or white NHS Stole over the CHS stole. Both are visible.
The graduates above are dressed properly for a CHS Graduation. None of them appear to have any CHS-authorized honors cords. The graduates below area also dressed properly and appear to also be wearing gold Honors Cords.
This graduate is wearing a National Honors Society stole. To be properly dressed for CHS graduation, they would need to be wearing the CHS white with gold trim stole underneath the NHS stole.
This is similar to our CHS stoles. They actually sit against the neck at the throat more so than the pictures elsewhere on this page. The longer, pointed end goes toward the back side. We will have gold trim and an embroidered gold and blue CHS logo on the front.
Cap decorations
Allowed & Not Allowed pics and descriptions on cap decorations.
Cap decorations must be 2D (flat).
Cap decorations must not be 3D (be visible when looking at it from the thin side).
Cap decorations may not contain lights, prisms, reflectors, or noisemaking devices.
No words or images may violate DCSD policies contained in the student handbook.
Cap decoration rules are issued from DCSD. We will enforce the guidelines.
Please be aware that arriving to CHS on Graduation morning wearing a NOT ALLOWED cap decoration will cause you to be upset. It will also force us to replace your decorated cap and replace it with a plain cap, while supplies last. If we run out of replacement caps, you will not be allowed to wear your decorated cap. You will not be dressed properly to walk. This may mean you do not get to walk. Please, please, please do not risk this harsh consequence.
If you choose to decorate your cap, follow the rules. You are not required to decorate your cap.
These caps are very cute and full of personality. Unfortunately, all of the caps here are all violating the NO 3D Decorations rule. 3D means NOT FLAT. 2D means FLAT. If you search Google with "2D Graduation Cap Topper" you will see a lot of flat ideas. When we look at your cap from the thin side, we should not see anything but flat. Paint, flat vinyl, and flat stickers usually work.
Beads, flowers, butterflies, dolls, toys, gemstones, yarn, craft dots, pompoms, folded fabric, paper origami, and rhinestones all have 3-dimensions to them.
Those who choose to decorate caps spend a lot of time and money doing so. PLEASE follow the rules.

Throwing your Cap & Tassel at Graduation is NOT ALLOWED
Throwing your Cap & Tassel at Graduation is NOT ALLOWED. There are several reasons: (1) it's unsafe; (2) It's wasteful; (3) it causes disruption during and after the recess of the ceremony; (4) Staff have limited time to clean up between ceremonies; (5) you will not get it back; (5) your adult will not get it back; (6) Staff must carry back excess garbage (discarded caps & tassels) on the bus. We will show you how to show your excitement in person, at graduation practice. We will remind you at the graduation staging just prior to walking. Throwing your Cap & Tassel at Graduation is prohibited. You may not leave your seat to go retrieve your Cap & Tassel. We will recess from the field the same way we practiced recessing at the graduation rehearsal. If a student throws their Cap & Tassel at Graduation, it is the same thing as throwing it into the trashcan. It is gone. You will not get a refund. You will not get it back. Your parent may not get it back. Your parent may want to keep your Cap & Tassel for sentimental purposes. Staff will be picking up the thrown-away Caps & Tassels that landed on the ground or seats, but they may not be handed back out. Staff must clean up the graduation area for the next graduation ceremony. Caps & Tassels are worn and discarded at that point and are considered unsanitary garbage. Do not throw your Cap & Tassel.
