Illnesses Caused by Bacteria in Preserved Food

Preserved food has been a local wisdom in Thailand for a long time. In the old days, our ancestors tried to find how to preserve food for a long time. It has been said that “Born to be Thai, wherever you live, you won’t starve.”

We can find many living things for food in our daily life. Nowadays, not many Thai people find enough time to preserve their own food. Mostly it has to be bought from markets. Today, we should be careful when buying preserved food from open markets. In studies, it was found that some preserved food from local producers are substandard, especially cleanliness of raw materials, processes of production and prevention of contamination of bacteria. Therefore, we should select preserved food in which cleanliness has been well controlled.

Food institute researchers had conducted their studies by random sampling some preserved food such as preserved cabbage and preserved bamboo shoots for analyzing clostridium perfringens contamination. These bacteria are found in soil, water and air and cause food poisoning. If the raw materials such as plants or vegetables are not clean enough, the bacteria may become harmful to us.

For those who enjoy having preserved food may study the result of the research by the Food Institute from the above table before deciding to eat those kinds of food.

Food and Medicine Organization (FMO) indicated that all odorless insecticides are still dangerous for humans if inhaled; they may cause nausea, dizziness and harm health.

On February 9th, Pharmacist Sri Nual Korakochakorn, Deputy of Food and Medicine Commission (FMO) revealed that at present, there were still a lot of household consumers using dangerous materials for controlling and killing insects and other animals including sterilizing and cleaning products. Most of them misunderstood that odorless or less odorant products were not or less harmful to human’s health. Some product presenters also showed how to smell the sweet- smelling products.

In fact, the scent may be from artificial flower scent. If the consumer inhales those dangerous products, they may get a headache, dizziness, nausea and harm their health.

The real purpose of using the scents for the harmful products is just to cover any unpleasant smell and to motivate consumers to select the products.
