I can’t believe it’s time to say goodbye to another great year at DHS. Between the library renovation (Yay!!!!), the many classes that visited for research and collaborative projects (including making content-based board games, 3D printing projects, and escape room activities), students selecting books for independent reading, and providing support for the 1:1 program, the library has been a very busy place!
This last newsletter of the year offers ideas and activities for the summer: DHS Summer Reading Program information, Summer Library Book Checkouts, and Dedham Public Library offerings. I’ve also included my own personal summer reading list, and when September rolls around, I will be very eager to hear what you have read over the break. I hope you all have an enjoyable summer vacation!
Best wishes to the Class of 2022! I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
― Mrs. Johnson
"In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other. Out of school, everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time, this collection of weeks when anything was possible."
―Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride
By now, all students and staff should know what book they will be reading for this year’s Summer Book Discussion program. If you have any questions, please see the information included below or visit the 2022 DHS Summer Reading Website.

I forgot which book I need to read! How can I find out? Check this list to locate your name and assigned book. (Note: This list can only be viewed by Dedham students & staff. Please use your Dedham school email to access.)
I don't think I've been assigned to a book group (or I haven't selected a book yet). Please contact Mr. Burd or Mrs. Johnson.
Although we are unable to offer our typical Summer Library Checkout Program since most of our print books are packed in storage during the library renovation, we can still provide you with access to a amazing collection of ebooks & audiobooks.
Our subscription to the MLS Commonwealth Collection helps you READ or LISTEN to books on your Chromebook, or on a personal device such as a phone or tablet. Use your school email account to log in to either the website or free Sora app.
-- Available to all DHS students & staff 24/7 --
This is also a great place to look for a digital copy of your DHS Summer Reading Book!
"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
—F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
People often ask me what books I’ll be reading over the summer, so I thought I’d share a few of the books on my current reading wish list.
I may not read all of these books (I’ll probably skip some and add others) but I always like to have a place to start.
Here’s my list (in no particular order):
Hatchet Island: a novel by Paul Doiron - I've read a new release in this mystery series each summer for the past several years. It's typically my kickoff book for summer reading.
I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys - I've enjoyed her previous historical fiction novels and I'm excited about this one. (One of the 2022 DHS Summer Reading Program Choices.)
The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes - I read the first in this series and it left me on such a cliffhanger. I need to find out what happens next.!
We are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson - I'm a sucker for end-of-the-world stories and this one sounds great!(One of the 2022 DHS Summer Reading Program Choices.)
The Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C. A. Fletcher - This has been sitting on my shelf at home since last summer and I'm finally making time to read it. It's another end-of-the-world story.... I told you that I enjoy them!
In Search of Sacco & Vanzetti : Double Lives, Troubled Times, & the Massachusetts Murder Case That Shook the World by Susan Tejada - I'm fascinated by this true crime story that has connections to both Dedham AND my hometown of West Bridgewater, MA. (One of the 2022 DHS Summer Reading Program Choices)
The Girls With the Louding Voice by Abi Dare - I was drawn to this novel about a Nigerian teen girl who is determined to get an education so she can speak up for herself.
Cloud Cuckoo Land: a novel by Anthony Doerr - I received this as a birthday gift back in November. It's a big, giant book with multiple timelines that I've been saving for when I have some time to devote to it. Looks like summertime might work!
Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara - Set in India, this mystery/thriller about a nine year old boy searching for his missing friend caught my eye, plus it has great reviews. It sounds like a great, fast-paced summer read!
The Lost City of the Monkey God : a True Story by Douglas Preston - This nonfiction adventure story has been on my list for several years. (One of the 2022 DHS Summer Reading Program Choices.)
Any suggestions on which I should read first?
Are any of these titles on your TBR list?
Do you have any other suggestions for me?
I’d love to hear what you’re reading! Send me an email if you read any amazing books during the summer that you’d like to recommend.
I am placing book orders for 2022-23 school year. Please complete this book suggestion form if you have a suggestion, whether it is a topic, series, a specific title, or author. We may not be able to get all the books that are suggested, but we appreciate your help in maintaining a selection of books that will be of interest to our school community! Please share your ideas!
If you have any questions about our library program and/or any suggestions on what we can offer, please let us know by completing this Parent/Guardian Feedback Form.

If you haven't visited the Dedham Public Library lately, this summer would be a great time to check it out. The DPL has a very active calendar of events, offering a variety of programs this summer for children through adults. Check out both their Calendar and their Teen Page to see what is being offered. Get away from the summer heat and enjoy the air conditioned space as you read, explore, create, and more!
Did you know that the Dedham Public Library has a large collection of free and/or discounted museum and park passes? If you’re looking for something to do this summer, check out one of the great places on their list. Art, history, science, zoos, aquariums...the options are great! You can reserve your passes online with your library card number. Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of these great resources available through your public library!
