Message From the Principal

It is a privilege every day to lead Eldorado Elementary as your Principal and I know that through our meetings, conversations and conferences in the future you will learn more about my story. For now let me share with you that I grew up in the Southeast of England, in a beautiful coastal town called Leigh–on–Sea. I discovered my love for learning while attending West Leigh Infant and Junior Schools, and Westcliff High School for Girls, and continued my post secondary studies earning a First Class (honors) Bachelor of Science Degree in Consumer Science from the University of Wales, College of Cardiff, and then a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, from the University of Wales, Institute of Cardiff.

My first teaching post was at my high school where I taught Design Technology: Food and Textiles, for three years. Westcliff High School for Girls is a grammar school focused on preparation for college. At the time it had 800 students, aged 11 – 18, and the experience allowed me to hone my skills in backwards planning, curriculum development, world class instruction, assessment and classroom culture. In 2001, I embarked on the most remarkable undertaking of my life and, with sponsorship from the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) Program, I moved to North Carolina to teach Family and Consumer Science. Hope Mills Middle School offered the chance to teach children of multiple cultures, socio-economic groups and academic needs. I loved each and every day I was able to move students forward with challenging design briefs, project based learning opportunities, practical application, creative and critical thinking, and all while having fun! I was sad to leave this picturesque part of the country, but knew, when my visa came to an end after two years, it was time to move on.

My third teaching post only lasted one year and was at a very challenging school, in England. It was during this year that I spent time working to renew my visa and planning to move back to a country for which I had developed a true love, America. The year was rich in experience and allowed me to develop the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculums for Food and Textile Technology, prepare students for national examinations, and mentor other educators in all aspects of teaching. I was selected to receive the national status of ‘Advanced Skills Teacher’ and traveled to schools around the Southeast of England coaching and instructing on classroom management, instructional strategies, student engagement, assessment, and differentiation for all types of learners.

In 2004, my new visa was granted and I was thrilled to return ‘across the pond’, this time to Colorado! I accepted a position at Mountain Vista High School, and was part of the team that opened the very successful Family and Consumer Science Department. Specializing in Food and Nutrition, Creative Foods, Interior Design, and Fashion and Merchandizing, I spent four years invested in every aspect of student life and was excited at the chance to become the Administrative Dean at MVHS in 2008. My time as a Dean allowed an extremely intense opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to be an effective leader and develop a strong understanding of administration in Douglas County School District. A year later I continued to develop my leadership philosophy as I accepted the position of Assistant Principal at ThunderRidge High School.

At TRHS I worked with amazing students, talented staff, and developed a strong passion for differentiated learning, character education, establishing positive culture and climate, providing world-class instruction, investing in cutting edge professional development, and ultimately ensuring ‘school’ is a safe, consistent, inviting and engaging place for children to be physically, academically, socially and emotionally successful. After 4 amazing years I was offered the opportunity to apply for the position of Principal at Eldorado Elementary, a school that feeds into the renowned ThunderRidge High School, and I accepted the position in March of 2013.

The past four years have been a humbling and enlightening experience, recognizing that Eldorado’s community trust and believe I can lead them through a period of educational change. I pledge every day to do my very best to make Eldorado a school of the highest quality where our children will thrive on every level, and where our mission is alive with the help of our invested community. As we embark on the 2017-2018 school year I envision our school being stronger and even more successful with the change in leadership model. Mr. Mike Carlson has been a fantastic Assistant Principal and I know he will only add value as my Co-Principal!

Warmest Regards,

Katy Kollasch
