Battling Biting Bugs: Besting Leishmaniasis

The international symposium titled Battling Biting Bugs:Besting Leishmaniasis, hosted by the Biochemistry Department of Deshbandhu College, under the aegis of IQAC and as part of the Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Voice of Youth Campaign, was a landmark event held on 21 February 2024. The symposium featured an inaugural program that began with a lamp lighting ceremony and Saraswati Vandana, inviting participation from the principal and faculty members to symbolize enlightenment and knowledge.
The event also included a special gesture of presenting saplings to esteemed guests and faculty, symbolizing growth and sustainability. Our chief guest, Dr. Vijay Kumar Prajapati was honored by Dr. Vineeta Kashyap, who also extended this gesture to Dr. Aditya Saxena, the IQAC Coordinator, emphasizing the importance of environmental consciousness within the academic community. Dr. Vanshika then felicitated Dr. Vineeta with a sapling.
Dr. Vijay Kumar Prajapati, Associate Professor, University of Delhi South Campus, New Delhi, delivered an oral presentation focussed on the intricate process of drug discovery for Visceral Leishmaniasis, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities within the realm of infectious disease treatment. Prof Dr. Eva Gluenz, a Royal Society University Research Fellow from the University of Oxford, who delivered online a comprehensive talk on the utilization of the CRISPR-Cas9 system for gene function studies in Leishmania, shedding light on the potential for groundbreaking advancements in genetic engineering and therapeutic interventions.
The symposium facilitated a rich exchange of knowledge, showcasing the latest scientific advancements and fostering a collaborative atmosphere among participants, which was made accessible to a broad audience through both online and offline modes. The event was attended by participants from varied College of DU and Universities like AIIMS, JMI, IIT and Bern University. This event not only highlighted the Biochemistry Department's commitment to advancing research but also underscored the role of academic gatherings in nurturing intellectual and environmental stewardship.
