Head's Headline

Last month saw students and staff take part in Remembrance assemblies at Croxley Danes. Students conducted themselves in an impeccable manner as they listened to Mr Brown talk about the many other nations that supported Britain in the First World War and the losses they suffered as a result. The school choir sang ‘Abide with Me’ and I read the famous and poignant poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Over the Remembrance Day weekend, a select group of students represented Croxley Danes at the annual Croxley Green Remembrance parade, laying a wreath on behalf of our school at the Croxley Green War Memorial. I am very grateful to all the staff members and students who were in attendance.

Our Sixth Form Open Evening in November was a great success with both internal and external students having the opportunity to explore our facilities, meet teachers and discuss the courses that will be available to them next year. Applications for Sixth Form are now open.

You will be aware that through our School Development Plan, we are keen to increase engagement with parents and carers. Thank you to all parents who have completed the survey that is currently open. We aim to report back on this before the end of term, with that report including the actions we will be undertaking in response to your feedback.

Campaign Champions in Parliament

Our fantastic Send My Friend Campaign Champions, Emma and Jess visited the Houses of Parliament last month to champion the Education in Emergencies Campaign organised by Send My Friend, a non-profit organisation that calls on world leaders to prioritise education and make sure children globally get the chance to go to school.

At the Houses of Parliament, Emma and Jess sat with Melinda Bohannon, the Director General, Humanitarian and Development to discuss global educational issues. They then took part in a speed meeting with MPs which provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the organisation’s work and goals and persuade MPs to take action in their fight for educational equality and to push the agenda at COP23.

Croxley Danes School Council

Croxley Danes School Council met for the first time this year on the 14th of November. The School Council is the forum by which student representatives can voice their opinions and affect school decisions. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity for students to introduce new initiatives that will enhance our school and its community.

Students from all year groups were in attendance at the meeting, as well as Mrs Walke (Assistant Headteacher), and a range of issues were discussed including the school environment, facilities, rewards, trips, student welfare, revision opportunities and spaces to study. There was a positive and respectful feeling throughout the discussions which were led by our Year 13 Head Boy Yousuf and Head Girl Freya.

Biology Photography Competition

Last month saw students and staff submit their entries for a Biology Photograph Competition run by Mrs Perry. Following the theme of ‘urban nature’, the brief was to take photos that included nature and life against the backdrop of the town or city.

There were many excellent and imaginative submissions with the winning entries chosen because not only were the photos beautiful in their own right, they also showed the wonder of nature and how wildlife and plants interact with the modern world.

The winners from each year group were Thomas B (Year 7), Charlotte C (Year 8), Daniel H (Year 9), Roksana M (Year 10) and Kasumi F (Year 11) who all won a certificate, merit and chocolate. The runners up were Daniel H and Kasumi F who also won £10 Amazon vouchers and the overall winner was Thomas B who won a £20 Amazon voucher for his fantastic action shot of seagulls at the funfair. Well done to all who took part.
