Week 5 Discussion

Can you read well? ... "Yes!" Can you do math well? ... "Haha, No!"

American Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, discusses the implications of being math illiterate.

If one were an adult and still unable to read, not only would they not want to advertise this fact, potentially due to personal embarrassment or the potential for ridicule, but there is often a social stigma attached to it. So why is it that when an adult is "math illiterate", it's often treated as a joke and it's more of the social norm? What are your thoughts about the reason for the difference between the two types of illiteracy? Do you feel after watching this video, that we have a problem in this country when, generation after generation, we see that math loses more of it's apparent importance and an increased number of people have grown to "accept" their math illiteracy?
