Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is offered for 9th-12th grade students. AVID is for students interested in pursuing education after high school, but not sure how to get there. AVID provides students the academic, social and emotional support to help them thrive not only in their rigorous classes, but also succeed in higher education and future endeavors. AVID is a home base for social emotional learning, routine, structure, and communication. Each AVID class also includes one work day a week (the other days consist of lessons and Tutorial sessions). AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID's Focus
· Providing students a welcoming, safe and supportive learning environment.
· Fostering the transition from being home with families to being at school with peers and teachers.
· Re-teaching executive functioning, social skills, and face to face communication.
· Easing students back into the rigorous school routine and helping them ramp up to their potential.
· Helping students handle fears and gain independence.
· Supporting students with the demands and expectations of high school.
· Encouraging students to envision themselves in a post-secondary setting of trade schools, community college, universities, and careers.
AVID as an Elective
AVID is an elective (program) that supports students in building their academic skills while planning for their post-secondary futures. Each grade level builds on the work of the previous year to ensure our students continue to progress. They strive to provide support to the content area classes through scheduled work days, grade checks focused notes, as well as Tutorials in the AVID classroom.
Tutorial and Work Day Support
Tutorials: Students bring in points of confusion from their coursework and engage in a tutorial session with their AVID classmates. Click here to see an example.
Work Days: On work days (typically Thursdays this year) students can take retakes, review for tests and complete assignments/projects for their other classes.
