Email Etiquette
"An email can make or break a potential opportunity for you, so send and respond to them wisely."
Please Note: Communication from teachers, counselors, and other staff are often done though email, so make sure you check it often.
● How you represent yourself to teachers, counselors, and other staff
● Make it brief, professional, and non-threatening
● Be mindful of titles and spelling names correctly
○ Ms., Mrs., Mr., Dr.
● Different from social media/texting; use formal language
○ Do NOT use inappropriate words or text lingo/slang like “Hey!, thx, ur”
● If you are angry, don’t email until you are calm or save the draft to be sent later
● Proofread before sending
● Subject line should be short and applicable
○ avoid writing the entire email in the subject line
Example:
Subject: Meeting Request
Dear Mr. Etheridge,
Would it be possible to arrange a time this week to discuss my latest English exam? I am available any day after school. It should only take about 15 minutes.
