Make A Ten Go Fish

An excellent game for teaching the CCSS skill of composing/decomposing numbers

You need a deck of cards that includes all of the cards Ace through 9 only.

      1. Shuffle the cards and pass 5 cards to each player.
      2. Each player removes any pairs that "make a ten" and places them in their tens pile (ace and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5).
      3. The object of the game is to "make ten" with pairs of cards.
      4. Players take turns asking another player for a card that is needed to make a ten. For instance, if the player has an 8 in his/her hand, he/she would ask for a 2. If the other player does not have the card, he/she says "Go Fish" and the asking player has to pick a card from the deck. If the player has the card, he gives it to the asking player and that player makes a ten to add to his tens pile. If a player runs out of cards, he just draws 5 more.
      5. The game continues until all cards have been paired into tens. The player with the most tens is the winner.

You can also play Make a 6, 7, 8, or 9 by only including cards in the deck that are less than the number that you are trying to make and asking for cards needed to make that number.
