So you want to go get a part time job. You need to pay for your car, your cell phone, the extras that your parents won't pay for... There are plenty of entry level jobs available for teenagers; courtesy clerk at a grocery store, cashier at a fast food restaurant, cashier at a clothing store. The possibilities are endless!
There are a few things to consider when you go out looking for a job. First of all, you should dress the part. You should always dress a step above the regular dress code at any establishment you apply at. For instance, if you are applying at Carls Jr., their dress code is black slacks and a polo. You should go in with black slacks (or skirt) and a nice button up shirt and/or sweater. Dressing to impress is an important "first impression".
Secondly, you will need to bring a resume and maybe even a cover letter. A resume states your education, skills, and experience that can bring benefit to the company. A cover letter conveys your intent for applying for a job. The cover letter also lets your potential employer know that you have good communication skills.
Last, but not least is the job application. Most employers require a job application in some form, whether online or on paper. Job applications provide past employment history as well as skills and education. A job application is usually required because applicants must sign the application and this will provide a legal document to the employer to access your work history as well as gain consent to call your references.
One of the most important pieces to the job seeking process is having good references. You should seek out people that know you well and can provide a good reference to your character and work ethic. The people you choose should be over the age of 18 and not be a relative. Some good examples are coaches, teachers, mentors, neighbors, close family friends, or even a former boss. Start asking people now so that you can have 3 references available when you participate in Mock Interviews.
