Kindergarten Music Class

Kindergarteners have music class two times a week for 30 minutes. Students enjoy and learn about music through singing, playing instruments, and moving to music!

Field School music students do not have any regular homework or assignments to be completed outside of school. Any music projects will be completed in class. Additional practice or study outside of class is not required, but is optional for any students who wish to further strengthen their musical skills.

Kindergarten Music Curriculum

Rhythm

• Demonstrate pulse
• Experience fast and slow
• Demonstrate long and short
• Experience short rhythm patterns through speech, body percussion, and unpitched instruments

Melody

• Recognize and differentiate between high and low
• Experience and perform sol-mi melodies
• Recognize, demonstrate, and perform up and down
• Establish proper vocal tone production
• Develop repertoire of folk, seasonal, multicultural, and patriotic songs

Harmony

• Experience melody alone and melody with accompaniment
• Experience barred instruments and use proper mallet technique

Form

• Recognize same and different sections
• Move to musical phrases

Tone Color

• Experience various instrumental sounds
• Recognize instruments as high-pitched or low-pitched
• Identify non-pitched percussion instruments
• Demonstrate loud and soft
• Distinguish between speaking, singing, whispering, and shouting

In District 64, K-5 music classes will include music that represents a variety of musical styles.
