Greetings Cardunal Community,
As all of you know, school safety is one of the most important factors in education today. In terms of my position, it is my number one priority. I’m happy that I have the support of both my team and my department in that focus. At DMS, we have recently seen an increase of threatening statements that have been made in a casual, or “joking” manner. While our staff understands that the adolescent brain is often impulsive and, sometimes, irrational in regards to actions and statements, we at DMS take these statements very seriously in order to safeguard the children and staff under our supervision.
Anytime any student makes a comment that can be perceived as a threat of violence or a threat to use or possess a weapon, we are obligated to complete a threat assessment with both our administration and local law enforcement. Please know that our view is that it is always better to err on the side of caution, to ensure that we are advocating for student safety. We commend those who come forward to keep our communities safe, and we appreciate the cooperation of our community members to help us eliminate any potential threats.
We kindly ask that you open a conversation with your child, or children, about remaining appropriate with their words whether they are in school, online, snapping, posting, or talking with their friends.
We thank you in advance for your support!
