6th Grade Science

January
January began with a big Engineering Design Challenge related to our Strange New Planet (SNP) investigation from the beginning of the year. We are planning to send a Lander to the SNP and have to deal with entry through the planet's atmosphere, descent to the ground and landing. This is called EDL at NASA for Entry, Descent and Landing, for us, it also meant, Egg Drop Lab. For this lab we focused on the descent and landing part of EDL. The students engaged in the engineering design process. Based on our customer's criteria and constraints the students imagined solutions, designed, built, tested, evaluated and redesigned protection for their lander.
Now we are investigating gravity and how it affects objects in space and ultimately formed our Universe. We started with our own Earth and Moon system and will move outward to the Solar System and beyond.
7th Grade
Seventh grade is beginning our new unit called Kelp Forest. It centers on Ecology and the interaction between living things and their environment.
As we begin our new semester it is a good time to check which school supplies need to be updated and replenished. Students need to have a binder to keep their science materials in, as well as writing utensils every day. Having the proper materials in class builds responsibility and improves success.
One last reminder. Assignments for each section of our units are due before our summative on that section. Missing work not done before that time will remain a zero in the grade book.

8th Grade
January
Eighth grade students will be using the Science and Engineering Practices to learn about waves and their applications in technology. We will look at a wireless speaker system to figure out the role that mechanical and electromagnetic waves play in how it works. We will examine the relationship between a sound wave's amplitude, frequency, and wavelength and how something sounds. We will also investigate different types of electromagnetic radiation and how it can be helpful or harmful.
