SPANISH I
Students learn the skills to survive in the Spanish-speaking world through the development of grammar and real-life applications that encourage communication, divergent thinking, and cooperative learning. Communication in Spanish flows as naturally and spontaneously as possible through all phases of learning. The student is expected to master language functions in manageable amounts with ample opportunity to exchange information and express themselves meaningfully -- both in spoken and written formats. The cultural awareness skills emphasize Spanish's human, dynamic aspect and guide students to think more critically by comparing culturally determined behaviors and beliefs with their own. Semesters: 2 Prerequisite: None Credit: l/2 per semester
SPANISH II
Students continue learning language functions by engaging in the process of communicating in Spanish. Students are actively involved in comprehending and responding appropriately to oral and written messages. Communication in Spanish continues to flow as naturally and spontaneously as possible through all phases of learning. Students are encouraged to speak within purposeful, real-life contexts throughout the year. The cultural topics guide students in how they should express themselves within an authentic cultural context. Students will see and hear native Spanish speakers within culturally authentic contexts. Students gain a greater understanding and acceptance of cultural differences by focusing as much on what people share as human beings as on the cultural differences that separate them. Semesters: 2 Prerequisite: Spanish I or permission of teacher Credit: l/2 per semester
SPANISH III - Dual Credit (MCC Elementary Spanish SPA 155/251)
In level 3, students begin to move away from memorized expressions and into more spontaneous communication. This course will continue to reinforce concepts covered in the first two levels, as well as introduce more advanced vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Use of the target language is a key component in this level as students continue to strengthen their language proficiency. Authentic resources will allow students to continue to develop their interpretive (reading and listening) skills. Students will continue to explore customs and traditions and enhance their appreciation for diverse cultures. Level 3 classes are aligned with the MCC 155 and 251 curriculum. This alignment will allow D155 students who earn a C- or better in this level 3 class (both semesters) to receive 7 credit hours and enroll in level 4 Dual Credit Spanish. Please note that any student who does not earn a C- or better in level 3 will not be eligible to enroll in the D155 level 4 Spanish. Prerequisite: Successful completion of D155 Level 1 & 2 language coursework.
Spanish IV - Dual Credit (MCC Intermediate Spanish SPA 252/255)
Students continue to develop their skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing for practical, everyday situations. They review previously learned grammar, refine comprehension and communication skills, and explore the history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: Spanish 251 with a grade of C—or higher or an appropriate score on the MCC Spanish Placement Test.
Spanish V: Dual Credit (MCC Advanced Conversation Spanish SPA 271/272)
Advanced Spanish Conversation & Composition I & II develop students' ability to listen to, speak, read, and write in the Spanish language at an advanced level. To reach this goal, emphasis is placed on the active use of the language at all times by all students. Written assignments and various oral presentations are required. Advanced vocabulary is also stressed. It is expected that all students work diligently, collectively, and independently in order to master the material that is covered in the course. Prerequisite: SPA 255 with a grade of C or higher or an appropriate score on the MCC Spanish Placement Test.
