AP and Dual Credit

Dual Credit Art Appreciation (AR601G/AR602G)

Dual Credit Art Appreciation is a semester-long course that focuses on appreciating all facets of art and what it has to offer us. The course will study the visual arts (painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and architecture) and how they express cultural traditions as well as offer human and aesthetic value to the world around us. The course examines how different factors contribute to our understanding of works of art, including their function and meaning. While the class focuses on the study of art and involves academic learning (reading, writing, research and tests), students will also be given an opportunity to participate in art-making for the joy and experience of it.

*Please Note* This class may be taught remotely, as a hybrid, or you might have to travel to another building.

DUAL CREDIT ART HISTORY (AR603G/AR604G)

DC Art History is open to sophomores through seniors. No previous art class experience is necessary. Students may participate in some art activities, have guest speakers and go on Field Trips. DC Art History offers two independent semesters that cover different parts of history. Single semester or both semesters can be chosen. The class includes academic learning about the history of art and will include reading, writing and research and tests.

*Please Note* This class may be taught remotely, as a hybrid, or you might have to travel to another building.

*This class is good for students who have been recommended by the English Department for AP English or advanced level English.

AP STUDIO ART (2D, 3D or Drawing) (AR621G/AR622G)

Advanced placement artists participate in and have the same expectations that Level Four artists do, except that in addition they are focused on creating a portfolio of work to submit to the College Board in May. Students create work that shows a Range of Approaches as well as an Exploration of a Theme or Idea throughout the year. They will submit an online portfolio of 24 pieces to the Board, as well as send in 5 original Quality pieces. Students in AP are often working in conjunction with Level Four students, so they will participate in the same opportunities and events throughout the year. An AP student is expected to take the AP Art class both semesters. This course is typically for Seniors.

*ART FOUR must be completed to be enrolled in AP Studio, or with instructor approval.

*Students must email Mrs Guss to activate approval.

AP STUDIO ART 2D (Photography or Graphic Design) (AR621G/AR622G)

AP Studio Art 2D is a year-long courses that encourages an advanced student to focus on digital art making (which can include Photography and/or Design). This course is for students that are highly motivated to do college level work while still in high school. AP is also an opportunity for students to qualify for college credit in a high school environment. AP work is not based on a written exam; instead, students are required to submit portfolios for College Board evaluation at the end of the school year. As an AP student, you will build your portfolio based on three sections; quality, range of approaches and exploration of a theme. AP work does involve significantly more time and commitment than most high school courses. Students in AP generally follow the outline of Portfolio experiences and opportunities, but have the added workload of the creation of the digital portfolio due in May to the College Board.

AP is typically for Seniors, but Juniors may be considered if approved by the instructor. It is a year long course; both semesters must be taken to complete the AP exam in May. Typically, only students who have completed Photo Portfolio or Design Production will be considered for AP (subject to instructor approval).

Students must email Mrs Guss for AP Design and Mrs DiLeo for AP Photo to confirm registration for this class.
