Studio Art

ART ONE (AR103G/AR104G) /// This is a studio class for beginners or those new to our Art program.

Focus is on strengthening creative and problem solving skills through the use of various art media and concepts. Media may include: drawing, painting, ceramics, and mixed media. Students will be asked to Think like an Artist by researching and learning the language of art, Act like an Artist by making and talking about art and Be like an Artist by creating an art portfolio and participate in our Spring Art Show. No previous art experience is necessary and everyone creates at their own level. Single semester course with no prerequisite open to Freshman through Senior.

ART TWO (AR201G/AR202G) /// Intermediate studio courses taken after ART ONE.

These courses is for the student who wants to strengthen their skills and expand their art making in either 2D (painting, drawing, mixed media) or 3D (sculpture or ceramics). Level Two consists of two semester long courses. Each semester is different and students can choose to take one or both semesters depending on scheduling. Students may have the opportunity for field trips, independent art shows or events. The goal for these courses is still a portfolio of the student's work, but with the hope that the artist is growing more independent and comfortable with their art. Open to Freshman through Seniors who have completed ART ONE.

*At least one Art 2 must be taken to move onto ART THREE.

ART THREE ( AR301G) /// Intermediate studio courses taken after ART TWO

In Art Three advancing students will have the opportunity to create personal artworks based upon their own aesthetic interests, tastes, and values. Students may create projects in any media they choose (2D or 3D) using new methods or methods introduced in class. Students will examine and interpret art movements, and the manner in which societies have judged visual art both past and present. Students may participate in Field Trips and Art shows including the spring CG Rising Art Show. The goal for these courses are to establish independence and confidence for the artist to make art of their choosing in their own voice and show that work in a portfolio. Each semester is different and open to Sophomores through Seniors who have completed at least one semester of ART TWO.

*This class is good preparation for students interested in Art 4 or AP Studio.

ART FOUR (AR401G/AR402G) /// Advanced studio courses taken after ART THREE

Art Four is a capstone class for students who have taken Art One, Two and Three. The goal of this course is to create a community of independent artists who support each other and sometimes work together to create work that will be seen publicly. Students are expected to keep an online Artist portfolio, create a single artist showcase of their work and participate in our advanced Art Shows in both Winter and Spring. The course will provide opportunity for Guest Artists, Field trips, Critiques, participation in art events and assistance in portfolio creation for post high school endeavors. Each semester is different. It is recommended students participate in both semesters but it is acceptable to take only one semester. This course is for Juniors and Seniors who have completed at least one semester of Art Three (preferred both semesters).

AP STUDIO ART (2D, 3D or Drawing) (AR621G/AR622G)

Advanced placement artists participate in and have the same expectations that Level Four artists do, except that in addition they are focused on creating a portfolio of work to submit to the College Board in May. Students create work that shows a Range of Approaches as well as an Exploration of a Theme or Idea throughout the year. They will submit an online portfolio of 24 pieces to the Board, as well as send in 5 original Quality pieces. Students in AP are often working in conjunction with Level Four students, so they will participate in the same opportunities and events throughout the year. An AP student is expected to take the AP Art class both semesters. This course is typically for Seniors.
