If you’ve read any of my book reviews, you’d realize they’re not reviews—but thoughts on what I’ve digested.How did the book make me feel (think)?Hopeful, was my initial emotion, as I flipped the pages. We live in a day where being Politically Correct is being savagely attacked as if being a better person, less toxic, less bullying is being stripped away from us because we are so hard done by; it’s a load of—Bear with me. I can’t fathom why there is a war on Political Correctness?Let me extrapolate. The Jamalzadah family risking great peril to themselves, escaped a war-torn region of the world, leaving loved ones behind—to perhaps, face unrelenting atrocities, all in the search for a better way of life. A life where they no longer fear for their safety with every step they take. However, with every step, they bemoan what they’ve left behind, family, identity, home. They arrive in a new unknown land, where the challenges of assimilation are daunting. They do their best. Yet, they face racist invectives from people (even children) conditioned by an insular existence, afraid of difference. I’m astonished by their courage.Flash to the present. A Sports Talk Celebrity (Hockey) with a large platform punches downward and drops a “you people” into one of his rants. He’s fired. The outrage by the followers of the sport is instantaneous. “How could you fire this ICON. PC culture has run amok. Everyone is way too sensitive these days.” They scream.In the meantime, another suicide bomb goes off in the war-torn country, killing innocent people. Hockey doesn’t seem as important anymore. But it does, because the PC attackers are hard done by, they rebel against their hatred being stifled by Political Correctness.Flashback to VOICE OF REBELLION. The Jamalzadah family worked long days, making a new life for themselves. They succeeded. The racist taunts are still there, but they’ve dodged bombs, they’d be okay. Mozhdah, through relentless work, her star began rising. She wanted to give back, impact change in her homeland. She tried to make a difference. She returned to her homeland, Afghanistan, to become a voice of influence. She tackled taboo subjects, the oppression of women; she punched upward. She challenged norms + encouraged evolving by becoming a beacon of hope for women, for those who have had their voices muted for far too long.“There are other things to consider,” she said. “Few divorced women will ever marry again, as it’s considered a disgrace to both herself and her relatives. The attitude is that the woman failed to protect the marriage.”“Even if the relationship ends because of abuse from the husband?” Mozhdah said indignantly.Back in her new home, people from her part of the world, are swathed with the same brush. Many interpreted the religion of her land—without an ounce of knowledge. They claimed that their bible (Quran) encouraged violence against women. It doesn’t. Nonetheless, a large portion of the male population in her homeland misinterpret the words of their bible. Misogyny lives carried forth from the Stone Ages, so deeply ingrained that an infuriating struggle to inspire change seems never-ending. Mozhdah fearlessly sheds light on this fact, while rousing a better way. She did this by asking questions. She continued to punch upward.TODAY“You people” continues to ring loudly as the Sports Personalities defend the words of their fired comrade. They continue to punch downward. They continue to punish the marginalized. After all, they have a platform. They continue to bully.Mozhdah, on the other hand, punched upward, calling out those who’ve been calling the shots — in Afghanistan, risking her life in doing so. Relentlessly, Mozhdah tries to make things better for those who’ve continually been bombarded by those with a large platform. She is the David, challenging Goliath.Back in the present, a mall Santa gets fired for posting pictures on Facebook playfully groping women. He says the women were okay with it. The attackers of Political Correctness go wild. They say it’s no big deal; everyone is too sensitive; he shouldn’t have been fired.I laugh at “playfully gr…”I guess Santa hadn’t been paying attention, and besides, he’s an adult, why would he post…never mind.I could never possibly understand the extent of Mozhdah and her family’s experiences, their drive, compassion and love + unwavering focus on creating a better way. I could never understand what it is like to be a refugee—but what I can say, Mozhdah, thank you for the audacity to punch upward in your quest to make the world a better place. The world is better because you’ve shared parts of your life. Far too many are punching downward because they fear change.Why speak about the Sportscaster and Santa? Because it is imperative, we don’t allow those with the loudest voice to drag us back toward oppression and misogyny. And, because it sheds light on the importance of checking those in power. If we don’t, the atrocities associated with it risk highlighting that regardless of where we’re from, many use their power for evil. It’s crucial to keep punching upward.VOICE OF REBELLION is an uplifting journey, providing beacons of hope for not only women but for all of us willing to open our hearts and to punch upward to bring about change.I’ll leave you with this “courageous loving family” that should be enough to stop those with large platforms from saying “you people” ever again. I know it likely won’t, but at least it’s a start.VOICE OF REBELLION is a must-read.

Over the last few years I have read quite a few nonfiction books about Afghan women. I wasn't familiar with Mozhdah Jamalzadah prior to reading, but after seeing in the publisher blurb she was given the nickname "The Oprah of Afghanistan", that got my attention for sure. I definitely enjoyed learning more about her but I can't say I was a huge fan of the writing style in this biography.Mozhdah Jamalzadah was born in 1982 in Kabul and fled Afghanistan with her family when she was five years old. The family lived in Pakistan for awhile, but they eventually settled in Canada. Mozhdah developed a talent for singing and after putting a poem her father wrote to music, she had a hit on her hands. After performing the song for Barack and Michelle Obama, she was given the opportunity to host a television talk show in Afghanistan. She was inspired by Oprah Winfrey to discuss important topics on her show such as domestic violence. This was a huge deal in Afghanistan as so many of the things talked about on The Mozhdah Show had not been discussed before in such a public way. While her show opened up a lot of eyes, the many death threats she received forced her to return to Canada.In my opinion this book isn't written like a traditional biography. It almost reads like a story as dialogue with quotations are used throughout the book and it is surprising in some instances such as when the family was fleeing Afghanistan these extended conversations could be remembered verbatim. By no means am I saying this book is full of false information because I do believe the author did capture the type of person Mozhdah is and what she has gone through during her life. I just would have preferred less quotations. For me this book falls more into the category of creative nonfiction.The other small criticism I have of the book is I feel like the author didn't really go into Mozhdah's personal life as an adult. So much of the focus was on her career which was definitely fascinating but I would have loved to know more about her life outside of work.Mozhdah Jamalzadah is certainly a trailblazer and I'm glad this book gave me the opportunity to learn about her.I won a free copy of this book in a giveaway by the publisher and the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. As a child, Mozhdah and her family escaped war torn Afghanistan and immigrated to Canada. As an adult, she traveled back to Afghanistan to host an Oprah style television show, which also featured music and dance.This book was a bit slow to start. It spent a lot of time on the families escape to Canada, but then skimmed over Mozhdah's teen and adult years. It felt like it was lacking details about her adult life. I would have liked to learn more about Mozhdah's fight for women's rights but those passages seemed very brief and lacked detail. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars.

I was inspired by the courage of Mozhdah to return to her war torn place of birth, Kabul Afghanistan, from where her family had barely escaped when she and her brothers were very young. Mozhdah’s strength and determination is handed down from her parents as they carve out a new life in Canada, but particularly from her mother who could create an opportunity like the “Mozhdah Show,” which challenged the backward and male dominated society persisting in Afghanistan.The harrowing tale of escape from Kabul and the dangerous episodes lived daily upon her return are illustrated in a way to heighten the senses by the author, Roberta Staley, who makes it a difficult book to put down. Well done to Mozhdah for living the life and Roberta Staley for bringing it to us in such an engaging fashion.

Fantastic article in November 14th Vancouver Sun paper about this amazing strong woman. What an unbelievable journey this woman has been on.Yes based on the story I read in today’s paper this will be the book for me to read.I am so happy to hear there are amazing women in this world and she is Truly Special
