This book is a must read for everyone. I was captivated by McMurry’s story from the moment I read the first line of the book. I read it in its entirety in one evening as I could not put it down. If you are dealing with the loss of a loved one, or are looking for a scientific and neurological insight into the process of dealing with grief, this book is for you. The personal stories woven throughout were a welcome surprise as I had expected it to be penned solely from a clinical perspective. She is a talented writer that has a knack for presenting detailed information in a thoughtful, easily understandable, and interesting way that entwines her personal narrative along with medical facts that can help any reader intimately connect to her story and to walk away with a solid understanding of how science and medicine view the grieving process. I would highly recommend this book as a gift to anyone that is dealing with loss.

Robin did an excellent job weaving her personal reflections on grief with the loss of her dad and her scientific nursing/medical research to explain the neurobiological process of grief our bodies experience. I lost my Dad when I was 26 years old suddenly without warning. I never got to say goodbye to him because I lived in the US, and he in Malaysia, and I have carried that guilt with me for the past 12 years. As I worked through the grief of losing my Dad, I did not realize that losing my mother this year would take me deeper down the rabbit hole of despair. While my Dad’s passing was sudden, my mother suffered in the ICU for 10 weeks before she passed on. Robin’s book could not have come at a better time. Reading “A Postmortem of Grief” is helping me work through my grief of losing my parents, and it will help anyone who has experienced loss to understand the science of grief. Additionally, as a registered nurse, I feel both nurses and physicians should read this book to understand the magnitude of grief families experience when they lose a loved one. Healthcare providers need to realize that they play a significant role in the grief family members experience when they lose a loved one. As Nora McInerny says, “We do not move on from grief, we move forward with grief.”

I received this book in the mail yesterday and could not put it down. I finished it yesterday evening. All 113 pages. I could not put it down. This book is relatable on so many different levels. I am a nurse, a science buff, a bookworm, someone who has suffered loss, and a human being. This book was beautifully written. I love how Dr. McMurry wove her childhood memories with what was presently occurring and also her experience as a medical professional. It hit home for me. I was bawling just a couple of pages into the prologue. This book helped my scientific brain comprehend the human condition of loss. I have been in the shoes of someone who has lost a loved one and I have also been the one caring for someone’s dying loved one. This book gives a better picture of how we can handle these situations in a sensitive and caring manner. This book is raw and exposed. It is hard to navigate grief while you are also grieving. Dr. McMurry states that our job is to comfort always and lighten the load even if we cannot lift it. Wonderful book. I cannot wait to share this with others and read it again. 5 out of 5 stars! Outstanding!

I found this book to be very beneficial. The isolation that one feels when the death of a loved one occurs can be overwhelming. The author let's you know that this feeling is normal...as well as a lot of other things that you might experience under the circumstances. Kudos for a very well written book that talks about things that we normally do not discuss.

As an emergency department nurse, this book convicted me to be gentler and offer more time to my grieving families. It put the loss in a new perspective that I will never forget.As a person, I wept through this imaging loss in my own family and reliving personal grief of my own.Dr. McMurry wrote an interesting and entertaining yet informative and emotional book regarding grief. The research included elevates it from a sad story to an educational experience. I am thankful she chose to share her own personal grief so that I might understand it better. This book will make me a better nurse.
