We've embedded some suggested talking points to use with TUGS where you see drop-down arrows below.
Please share suggestions and ideas for how you go over TUGS at the beginning of each year and how it's revisited throughout the year.
Using technology responsibly is very important. I always need to act as a safe, secure, and responsible cyber-citizen. The keyword to remember is RESPECT!
The following are some basic expectations for my use of technology:
I will respect myself.
I will use technology in a safe manner.
I will keep my personal information private.
What is information should stay private? Anything that can be used to identify you- like your name, address, phone, email, grade, school
Personal information might be that you have a dog, you like soccer, you like vacations at the beach - but without the names of the dog or the beach. (often used for passwords)
I will take steps to build and maintain a positive digital identity and footprint.
Discuss what a digital footprint is. It is something that follows you wherever you go. Digital footprints include details and information posted about you online. Explore lessons from Common Sense Education.
I will talk to a trusted adult whenever I feel uncomfortable or need help.
I will respect the rights of others.
I will only share passwords with the teacher or a parent/guardian.
I will respect the privacy of others’ passwords, files, and data.
I will create content that is constructive, appropriate, and respectful of others.
What kind of content could you create that is appropriate and respectful of others? What do those words mean?
I will treat others online as I would like to be treated.
Review the Golden Rule
I will record pictures, voices, and video of others with the consent of the other person.
What does it mean to get someone else's consent? Why is it a good idea to ask permission before recording or posting pictures, voices, or video of others?
I will respect the purpose of school technology.
I understand that school accounts are for educational purposes.
I will access and use technology in expected ways to do my own work.
This is a great time to have a conversation about doing their own work and academic honesty. For some classes, it's also a time to discuss the use of AI. How do we work with it as something that is supporting us, not doing the work for us?
I understand that all work stored on school accounts and equipment belongs to the school and may be accessed by school personnel.
I will stay on task and visit appropriate sites.
I will respect the technology.
I will take good care of equipment and use it as it is intended to be used. I understand I may be responsible for damage that is caused by my misuse or lack of care.
I will take responsibility for school-provided devices and ensure that it is charged and in good condition.
Why is it important that the device is charged? What might "in good condition" mean? What are some things you should remember about taking care of the device? (no food/drink, holding it carefully when moving around, etc.)
I will keep settings in place on shared equipment and report any damage to an adult.
I understand that the devices I bring from home are my responsibility. The school is not responsible for personal devices that are broken or stolen.
I will respect the law.
I will create original work and always give proper credit to the creator for words and media (images, music, videos) included in my work.
What does "giving credit" mean and why is that important? How do we responsibly find resources to use in projects? (or better yet, create them!) Discuss copyright!
I will help the community by reporting any suspicious online activity (spam, phishing, pop-ups, etc.).
