Unit 9

Global Change

15-20% of AP Exam

Unit Focus:

A central aspect of environmental science is to understand the global impact of local and regional human activities. Humans can mitigate their impact through sustainable use of resources. Human activities can cause ozone depletion in the stratosphere and increases in the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Increases in greenhouse gases can cause human health and environmental problems. These environmental problems include global climate change, ocean warming, and endangered species. Overall, this course provides an opportunity to examine the interrelationships among the natural world and challenges students to evaluate and propose solutions to a variety of environmental problems.

Exam Prep:

On the AP Exam, you will need to be able to identify and discuss strategies that would prevent extinction and how to implement them. To help you build this skill you will read multiple sources that will allow you to propose realistic solutions that would prevent the extinction of certain species and explain the advantages, disadvantages, or unintended consequences of efforts to prevent extinction. You will also use a variety of diagrams and models that illustrate global climate change to help you differentiate between global climate change and ozone depletion. You will need to be able to explain how a visual representation illustrates an environmental science concept or process.

Essential Questions:

What impact can local and regional human activities have at the global level?

How can minor environmental changes have a large impact on the health of a species?

This Unit Focuses on the following Science Practices:

SP 1 Concept Explanation: Explain environmental concepts, processes, and models presented in written format.

SP 2 Visual Representations: Analyze visual representations of environmental concepts and processes

SP 7 Environmental Solutions: Propose and justify solutions to environmental problems
