Special Education & Support Services
Response to Intervention (RTI)
RTI is a method of academic intervention. It is designed to provide early, effective assistance to students who are having difficulty learning or are not on grade level in reading and/or math/ RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention and frequent progress monitoring.
All students will be evaluated three times per year. These evaluations will be held in August, January, and May. Evaluations will take place during a student's Math or English classes. Evaluation results, prior EXPLORE and PLAN scores, and course grades will determine if a student needs intervention in math, reading or both.
Students will be scheduled into Intervention study hall every other day. Some be required to attend before school (7:50-8:20) if the qualify for intervention in both areas. Any student needing intervention will be given differentiated assignments in their qualifying area and receive a grade based on progress monitoring throughout their time in the program. This grade will be part of their English and/or Math grade.
504 Accommodation Plans
As defined by federal law, a 504 Accommodation Plan is written for "an individual with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." Major life activities are: self-care, manual tasks, walking, seeing, speaking, sitting, thinking, learning, and breathing. Some students will need a 504 Plan for chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, or allergies. Other students will need a plan temporarily for surgeries, hospitalizations, and broken arms/legs. A doctor's diagnosis is needed for many 504 plans.
Special Education
Special Education services are provided to those students who are identified per criteria set forth by Midstate Special Education Cooperative. The services provided reflect the individual needs of each student as recorded on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). These services may range from adaptations/modifications within the regular classroom to individual instruction in a small group setting.
