Writing a résumé can be time consuming and tedious!  The good news is that once you have written yours you can use it over and over again.  Of course you will want to edit it here and there when things change, or when you are applying for something specific, but for the most part once you have the framework you are in good shape!

If you are wondering why you would need a résumé the answer is that applying to college is like applying for a job in many ways.  When you apply to a college you want to present yourself in a way to them that makes you the best choice for the “job.”  Colleges, just like potential employers, want to know what experience you have that will make you an asset to their organization. 

Something to keep in mind… When you are gathering information for your resume, make sure to count any volunteer experience, service learning, and extra-curricular activities you have been involved in.  Also, you will want to limit your information to your high school years.  Don’t forget to include your GPA and your highest ACT/SAT score!

 In addition to a résumé many college admissions and scholarship applications require recommendation letters.  When considering who to ask for a recommendation letter, choose adults who have known you or have worked with you during your high school years.  Teachers, counselors, principals, youth leaders, and ministers are great choices!

When you have decided who to ask for a recommendation letter make sure that you give them plenty of time to honor your request!  No one likes being asked to do something at the last minute!  Also, it’s a good idea to ask them for multiple copies of the letter.  More than likely you will use the same letters for multiple applications.  If you get several copies up front, your reference won’t have to write you a new letter each time.

One more VERY IMPORTANT tip for recommendation letters… Make sure to give a copy of your résumé to the person you have asked to write a letter for you!  This will make writing the letter much easier.  They will be able to quickly reference information like your GPA, your years of club membership, etc.
