The Design Engineer is responsible for executing and managing a variety of tasks including Product design and development, customization of existing products. In addition, you will assist the Production team to develop assembly processes and troubleshoot any issues on the production floor.

Key Skills and experience:

• Previous experience in mechanical drafting, manufacturing or other related fields

• A strong mechanical ability and technical skill to assemble and create mechanical furniture assemblies and processes/instructions to build them.

• Secondary Skills preferred:

  • Manufacturing Process engineering (SOP’s)

  • Quality Control, Continuous improvement, Lean Manf, 5S

  • Estimating/quoting experience

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare Design documents - Solid models, manufacturing part prints and Assemblies in SolidWorks

• Bills of materials (BOM) created for new or customized products

• First Article Inspections (FAI) - Periodic quality audits of all parts and assemblies.

• Review and modify designs to reduce production deficiencies

• Manufacturing team support - Work closely with production supervisor to solve production issues caused by non-confirming materials.

• Manufacturing engineering - Assist in development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for production floor for new products and custom jobs (pre-job brief).

• Product Testing / Compliance – assist in testing of products to meet specified criteria, ie. UL compliance

A day in the life as a Designer...

• Drive sales and a differentiated experience by providing enriching customer interactions, and providing elevated design offerings in the store, in-home and virtually with customers.

• Create elevated designs for customers using the preferred design tools to create moodboards, 2D & 3D floor plans, product lists and customer presentations.

Experience designing complex progressive dies required. SolidWorks and AutoCAD experience preferred. Participation in die design reviews, DFM, prototyping and development activities are routine. Cost estimating experience a plus.

Essential Job Functions:

• Designs progressive dies, tools, fixtures, and gages per customer specifications, and/or in accordance with Lyons Standards.

• Produces detailed drawings, specifications, and component lists.

• Provides strip layouts and assembly drawings to customers for external design reviews, as required.

• Issues engineering drawings upon completion of the design.

• Updates engineering drawings per Toolmaker’s notes and mark-ups, if any, upon completion of build.

• Solicits quotations for all components associated with the build of the tool.

• Generates bills of material for raw materials and purchased components.

At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer I (Entry-level) to join the EWS Wiremold Team in West Hartford, CT. Design and develop product solutions to meet all customer requirements.

What Will You Do?

• Performs design and development on existing and custom engineered products used in electro-mechanical products. Direction is based upon marketing and purchasing input, both individually or under direction of more senior level design engineers. Develop or modify product specifications in accordance to customer requirements.

• Identify and validate appropriate codes and agency standards and testing requirements, conduct testing and document results.

• Create sketches, 3D files and prototype designs to provide different options that are used to satisfy the product requirements. Then evaluate these concepts to choose the best design for Wiremold. Create final 3D models, assemblies, and drawings to refine, develop and finalize the design.

• Interface and direct offshore design teams through the product development cycle. To include product concept, design, documentation and production as need.

• Refine and complete the design through modeling, prototyping, testing, analysis, piloting, and inspection of processes and first articles. Work closely with Advanced Manufacturing, Tool Shops and Manufacturing to procure prototype and production product components.

• Complete product documentation to support production, including engineering drawings and specifications, bills of materials, quality requirements and testing.

• Managing projects to rapid and effective completion including spanning departmental gaps.

• Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: 4 - years technical degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 1 - 3 years’ engineering experience is required, design experience preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

• Understanding engineering concepts, materials and manufacturing processes. Must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to practical problems.

• Strong computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, e-mail and meeting management software. Ability to use internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively. Proficient in the use of 3D CAD software. SolidWorks preferred.

• Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team-based environment. Fosters open communication and support an environment of innovation and creative change.

• Demonstrated creativity in the development of new product design concepts. Ability to create sketches, 3D files and prototype designs to express all the different options that are used to satisfy the product requirements. Good hands-on skills for creating prototypes to express design concepts.

• Requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be able to effectively handle multiple priorities. Must possess good project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a number of projects at various stages of work.

• Must have good verbal and written communications skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.
