Artist Statement
Growing up, I have always been the kid in the back of the class doodling in their notebook. There was never a time I did not want to draw. Art has always been my go-to and my passion; I’ve always sought after new ways to enhance and improve my skills. My parents would try to get me to do other hobbies or seek other goals that could benefit me in the long run, but I would always come back to art. They saw my love for art, and they encouraged me to go after it. There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to express what you feel, what you see, what you envision. What I convey in my pieces vary depending on the piece that is being viewed. My pieces are types illustrations of various things ranging from original characters, sea life, songs, myself, aliens, and so on.
With my piece “Blue Blood”, I have a relationship and a long history. “Blue Bloods” is based on a song by the same name and has a special meaning to me. The song reminds me of my home back in New Jersey and gives me a warm yet melancholic nostalgic feeling. In the piece(s), I wanted to portray clasped hands holding what appears to be a soul; the hands are raining down a blue liquid over a silhouette of a house with a single luminated window.
I had this idea of the hands holding a soul because of the lyrics of the song, “you can at me in the midnight to show me my soul”. The rain segment is because of my own fond memories of waiting at the bus stop in the pouring rain for school, and that song would come on and it would seem so fitting. The silhouette of the house symbolizes it being the dead of night, absolutely dark outside, and very calming because everything is asleep, but just seeing that single window with the light on inside makes it feel comforting. You wonder who is awake at that time of night.
This song means so much to me and trying to convey how I feel and what I see is difficult. I never understood when I heard artists say they want to paint someone or something, but they could never capture their beauty, until I tried to capture how this song has impacted me. Every version I tried to create I felt as though I could have made it better. So far, with the most recent piece, I have felt at peace with it.
I love making my little illustrations and once in a while I make pieces that I wish will evoke different meanings from its viewers. I wonder what interpretations “Blue Bloods” has collected from those who have seen it.
