Artist Statement

I enjoy collecting various objects such as oddities, porcelain dolls, clown figurines, candles, and general trinkets. All of these inspire my work. My room is adorned with these objects and my room is my solace, it’s only natural that I’d expand this little world of mine into my illustrations. As an avid daydreamer, my head is in the clouds and this is reflected in my artwork. Human-like figures inspired by dolls, clowns, and gothic whimsy are what my work consists of.

I enjoy drawing and illustration, and the media I use is graphite pencils, ball point pens, and digital software. I primarily work in black and white however when I do use color I like to use muted colors. I enjoy the softness of graphite and smudging for a hazy dreamy effect. It also can give an aged feel and look to paper that I feel reflects the subjects of my work. Digital drawing is convenient for me and allows me to work with color easier. It also lends itself to very small detail work while working on a smaller surface.

What motivates me to continue creating is wanting to get the images I have in my head out to be seen. I want to take my art a step further and sculpt and create my own dolls inspired by my artworks. I hope to be able to share my work with others who have similar interests and aesthetics.

Thank you, Alejandra! Well done on a clearly argued/written paper. There are quite a few formatting issues throughout that hindered this from being a perfect paper (also a bit late + missing another scholarly source - Said or Bhabha would've been perfect here!), but otherwise great work on your engagement with Orientalism and the violence of aestheticizing/stereotyping middle eastern communities.

I really enjoyed your essay! This is exactly the kind of analysis I hoped to see -- with a clear logical argument supported by historical details and visual analysis. One suggestion: your second paragraph is rather lengthy - always pay attention to balance of writing/break up large paragraphs (easier to read). Nice work!
