Fall Solo & Ensemble is coming up soon! Please check the posted schedule to find your performance time.
Rehearse early and often. Practice with your accompanist or ensemble multiple times before the event.
You may use class time for rehearsals—three rehearsal spaces are available. A rotating schedule may be used based on demand.
You are also encouraged to rehearse outside of class for extra preparation.
Performance length: Your event must be at least 1 minute 30 seconds long. You may perform two pieces to meet this requirement. Performances shorter than 1:30 will not receive a rating.
Ensembles: Each performer must play a separate part—no doubling. Typically:
High instruments → Part A
Mid instruments → Part B
Low instruments → Part C
If you’re unsure which part to play, please ask a director.
Bring the original score/book with you or confirm that a director has it.
Dress nicely – this is a formal performance.
Arrive 45–60 minutes early to allow time for parking, check-in, finding your warm-up room, and getting your original from headquarters.
Warm up comfortably, but save your best playing for your performance!
If you are a soloist, Mr. Weber will meet you at your performance room (or before) to accompany you. Timing can be tight, so don’t worry if you need to wait a few minutes between performances.
A few minutes before your event, head to your performance room. Room workers will assist you.
Hand your music to the worker.
Set up chairs and stands so the judge can see you clearly.
Play a few notes to get used to the room and re-tune with your accompanist or group.
When the judge and worker are ready, your event will be announced—smile, take a breath, and enjoy your performance!
After performing, the judge will offer feedback and suggestions. Once finished:
Return to the warm-up room to pack up.
Come back to the performance room for your original music and rating (usually ready after the next performance).
Return your original to headquarters.
Collect your medal if you received a Division I or II rating—everyone in your ensemble earns their own medal!
The entire Solo & Ensemble experience—from arrival to departure—typically takes 60–90 minutes. The performance and feedback portion lasts about 15 minutes.
Good luck, Red Hawks! Perform with confidence, musicianship, and pride! ❤️🎶
Bus Riders: Stay on your bus all the way to the high school. Do not get off at the middle school.
Parent Drop-Off: Drop students off at the high school only. Do not go to the middle school. Doors open at 7:20 AM.
Entrances:
Bus Riders (Door 13): Enter and go straight past the cafeteria (stop here for breakfast). Take the first right after the cafeteria, follow the hall to the end, turn left, then take the next right.
Parent Drop-Off (Door 1): Enter and go straight down the hallway (cafeteria on your right, stop for breakfast). At the end, turn left, then take the next right.
Rehearsal:
1st and 2nd hour bands will rehearse together onstage during 1st and 2nd hour.
Students will be marked “field trip”.
It’s best to leave instruments at the high school until tonight’s concert. If you take your instrument home, you must bring it for the performance.
After Rehearsal:
The band will return to the middle school by bus at the end of 2nd hour.
Proceed to 3rd hour and continue the normal schedule.
Rehearsal Instructions:
All bands report to the middle school band room for 3rd hour.
Bands will take buses to the high school for rehearsal.
Rehearsal will be onstage. While one band is onstage, the other will sit quietly in the front bowl of the auditorium.
Instrument storage: It’s best to leave your instrument at the high school until tonight’s performance. If you take it home, be sure to bring it back for the concert.
After rehearsal, bands will return to the middle school by bus during 4th hour.
Both bands will take C lunch at the middle school; 7th grade will eat in the band room.
Students will resume their normal schedule at 5th hour.
Do I have to wear my concert clothes to the rehearsal?
No, only wear your concert clothes for the performance that evening. Your regular school attire is perfect for rehearsal.
Will there be someone at the high school to guide me in the morning to the band room?
Yes. We will have high school band ambassadors to help guide 6th Graders to breakfast and the band room.
Why does the 6th Grade Band start their day at the high school and not go the middle school?
Simple answer, bussing. All the buses stop at the high school after dropping off middle schoolers. They then head back out to pick up elementary schoolers for their school day. The earliest a shuttle could get students would be 9:30am, which does not work with our field trip schedule (which is built for minimal school day disruption). It's easier to start our day at high school with normal transportation operations, then get a shuttle back to the middle school.
How do I get my instrument to the high school?
You will load the trailer on Monday at the end of your class period. You are still welcome to bring it with you on Tuesday if you wish to practice Monday night.
Can I leave my instrument at the high school after our rehearsal?
YES! It is best if you leave your instrument at the high school; it'll be one less thing you have to remember that evening.
What if I miss something in my other class?
The teachers have been notified of this field trip. That being said, it is the student's responsibility to check with your teacher and make sure you make up any work according to their absent work policy.

Did you know you can listen to the recordings of our band pieces at home? A link to the Reference Recording Sheet is available at the bottom of the TWIB. Listening to the reference recordings is one of the best tools you have to understand what each piece should sound like. As you listen, focus on tone quality, balance and blend, style, and musical phrasing. Use these recordings to guide your practice and elevate your ensemble performance!

The Cory Band, based in Wales, is one of the most celebrated brass bands in the world, renowned for its exceptional musicianship, innovative programming, and rich tradition. With a history dating back over a century, the Cory Band has won numerous national and international championships and is known for pushing the boundaries of brass band performance, blending traditional repertoire with contemporary works. Their performances showcase the full expressive range of brass instruments, from powerful, majestic fanfares to delicate, lyrical passages, demonstrating both technical precision and emotional depth.
European brass bands in general share this rich tradition, particularly in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany, where the brass band movement has strong cultural roots. These ensembles typically consist of cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and percussion. European brass bands are highly disciplined, often performing in competitions, concerts, and community events. They are known for their versatility, capable of performing classical transcriptions, contemporary works, marches, hymn arrangements, and even jazz and pop adaptations.
Together, the Cory Band and European brass bands exemplify a unique musical culture that values precision, teamwork, and expressive artistry, keeping a centuries-old tradition alive while continuing to innovate for modern audiences.
