District Solo & Ensemble is coming up soon! Please check the posted schedule to find your performance time.
Rehearse early and often. Practice with your accompanist or ensemble multiple times before the event.
You may use class time for rehearsals—three practice rooms are available and additional spaces may be available following Winter Assessments. Please be courteous of events using spaces.
You are also encouraged to rehearse outside of class for extra preparation.
Performance length: Your event must be at least 2 minutes long. You may perform two pieces to meet this requirement. Performances shorter than 2 minutes will not receive a rating.
Ensembles: Each performer must play a separate part—no doubling.
Double check on your original score. If you're music was digital or Public Domain, check with a director to make sure all the proper documentation is taken care of and that your score is professional for the judge (bound or in a nice folder).
Bring the original score/book with you or confirm that a director has it.
Dress nicely – this is a formal performance.
Arrive 45–60 minutes early to allow time for parking, check-in, finding your warm-up room, and getting your original from headquarters.
Warm up comfortably, but save your best playing for your performance!
If you are a soloist, Mr. Weber or Mr. Schultz (Tri-County's director) will meet you at your performance room (or before) to accompany you. Timing can be tight, so don’t worry if you need to wait a few minutes between performances.
A few minutes before your event, head to your performance room. Room workers will assist you.
Hand your music to the worker.
Set up chairs and stands so the judge can see you clearly.
Play a few notes to get used to the room and re-tune with your accompanist or group.
When the judge and worker are ready, your event will be announced—smile, take a breath, and enjoy your performance!
After performing, the judge will offer feedback and suggestions. Once finished:
Return to the warm-up room to pack up.
Come back to the performance room for your original music and rating (usually ready after the next performance).
Return your original to headquarters.
Collect your medal if you received a Division I or II rating—everyone in your ensemble earns their own medal!
The entire Solo & Ensemble experience—from arrival to departure—typically takes 60–90 minutes. The performance and feedback portion lasts about 15 minutes.
Perform with confidence, musicianship, and pride! ❤️🎶
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is a non-profit summer school of the arts specializing in two-week arts programs for intermediate and high school students. We are excited to announce that a Scholarship Representative from Blue Lake will be listening to students for scholarships and sharing some information about the summer camp programs.
While you may not be sure if this is something you would like to consider for your child, the presentation and audition process is a great learning experience for students. If you do choose to send your student to Blue Lake, there may be a scholarship available to help cover the cost of tuition.
Please complete the online Merit Scholarship Application if you have not already done so. It takes about 5 minutes and will expedite the results. Within the application, they will be asked to enter the date of our scholarship day, along with a code.
Complete this form: Merit Scholarship Application
Include this date: January 6
Include this code: 1446

As we head into the second half of the school year, please take a moment to check the band calendar for all required events and performances through the end of the year. Concerts, festivals, and end-of-year events—including Memorial Day, Graduation, and Welcome Weekend—have been posted since April 2025. Staying familiar with the calendar helps ensure everyone is prepared and able to participate fully. Thank you for your continued commitment and support of our band program!
It’s wintertime in Michigan, and Mother Nature doesn’t always make it easy for us. In the event that school is cancelled, performances are NOT automatically cancelled. All events will continue as scheduled unless school administration determines that all afternoon events are cancelled.
Any performance cancellation will come through a separate, official communication from the band directors and school administration. During inclement weather situations, the directors remain in constant contact throughout the day, and official rulings are typically made between 1:00–3:00pm. Decisions regarding afternoon events are based on the safety of travel both to and around campus.
If the school administration cancels all afternoon events, the district will post an official notice, and the band directors will follow up with a confirmation that the performance is cancelled. Please remember that only the school administration and band directors serve as official information sources in these situations. This applies to concerts, basketball games, and any other required performances.
If the performance moves forward but you do not feel comfortable allowing your student to travel, please let us know. The student will still need to complete an approved make-up assignment to receive full credit for the performance.
Stay safe, and thank you for your flexibility during Michigan’s winter season!
Did you know you can listen to the recordings of our band pieces at home? A link to the Reference Recording Sheet is available at the bottom of the TWIB. Listening to the reference recordings is one of the best tools you have to understand what each piece should sound like. As you listen, focus on tone quality, balance and blend, style, and musical phrasing. Use these recordings to guide your practice and elevate your ensemble performance!
