Pillars of Adolescent Reading

Teaching reading to young students focuses on a different set of skills than those needed at the secondary level (4th-12th grades). Young readers particularly need phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. At the secondary level, though, students have different needs in literacy instruction.

On this page, you will find links to each Pillar of Adolescent Reading. These skills are needed for students to be able to access content-specific texts. Click on the one you are interested in and it will take you to a page with descriptions, resources, and lessons/strategies that focus on that particular skill.
