Everyone in APES will master GLOBE protocols in class. Protocols are methods and procedures we use to make standard atmosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and Earth system measurements. These protocols will be introduced in the many lab investigations you will participate in.
Earth is a complex, dynamic system we don't fully understand yet. Like the human body, the Earth is composed of diverse processes that intersect in complex ways. To completely grasp the impacts of any singular phenomena, we must study how that phenomena fits in with the rest of Earth's systems. This research is complicated by the fact that our planet is always changing, with the various cycles in one sphere influencing the outcomes in many others.
In order to paint a better picture of how the Earth acts as a unified System, the GLOBE Program focuses on encouraging you to explore the Earth spheres on a global, regional, and local level. To facilitate this goal, GLOBE created five (5) Earth sphere communities where participants can engage in scientific collaboration with NASA, students, and scientists from around the world.
Curiosity - Ask your own questions about the environment around you and then create a way to answer these questions by collecting real-world data.
IVSS - Participate in the IVSS (International Virtual Science Symposium) held every spring. The IVSS provides you with a chance to share your research, discuss that research with your peers, earn virtual badges, and receive feedback from a team of STEM professionals. An annual, GLOBE-organized event, the IVSS is hosted entirely online and is open to students from around the world. Each event focuses on a new them, fostering a wide variety of student-led research from year to year.
Explore new places and learn new things - It's just good fun to be outdoors collecting data and learning about things you've always wondered about

Watch the short video above for an idea of what GLOBE research is all about. This research was completed by students last year for the IVSS.
GLOBE Learning Expeditions (GLEs) are organized every few years in order to provide students from around the world the opportunity to present their research projects to their peers, to GLOBE scientists, and the greater GLOBE community. These conferences also provide students the opportunity to establish friendships and develop collaborative partnerships that enhance future GLOBE experiences.
Click on the above video to experience what the 2018 Ireland GLE was like. We had five (5) APES students who were selected to attend for their research on the 2017 Solar Eclipse that we had almost total coverage for in our area. We spent two (2) weeks in Ireland attending the GLE conference (look for the APES students in the video above - they are wearing bright yellow Detroit shirts) and touring Ireland.
Imagine winning a fully paid for trip to attend the 2014 GLE in India. That happened for four (4) very dedicated Crestwood APES students.
