Whenever it is safe, our high school will provide you with a copy of the following district adopted textbook to use for the school year: Friedland and Relyea, Environmental Science for AP, 1st ed., W.H. Freeman and Company ISBN-13: 978-0-7167- 3849-7. Our textbook has an online version but you have to pay for access and we did not purchase this access because the interface does not work well with iPads, Chromebooks, and other readers.
Until you are able to sign out a textbook, I will make essential reading content available to you in a readily accessible format.
Our textbook does not follow the order of the new College Board AP Environmental Science Course and Exam Description (CED). As a result, your textbook readings will come from many different sections within several different chapters.
The merits, advantages, AND shortcomings of review books will be discussed as the year progresses. Students will have the chance to preview books in advance to see if purchasing one makes sense for them. Although these review books do have a possible place in a student's preparation for the APES College Board Exam, there are plenty of resources and practice that I will provide access to that has been sufficient in the past to help students prepare at the highest levels.
The Princeton Review is updated each year and includes recent changes to the APES curriculum. Do not purchase either of the review books shown unless you KNOW you will use it, otherwise it may become an expensive door stop.
The Barron's Review is probably the most comprehensive APES prep book available with online support. I have purchased each of two review books currently available for the updated APES curriculum and I will discuss each of their merits as the year moves forward.
McGraw-Hill's 5 Steps To a 5 AP Environmental Science review book has been completely re-written this year to reflect changes made to the APES curriculum in 2020. This prep book plus the other two are all available for online purchase.
Podcasts and other web resources are a way to keep up with current events and you only need moments to listen and learn a great deal. If you use IOS there is a Podcast App that allows you to subscribe to a variety of different podcasts. Those listed below are some of my favorite for keeping up-to-date on current environmental issues.
The Environment Report, hosted by Lester Graham, explores the relationship between the natural world and the everyday lives of people in Michigan. Keeping up with current environmental issues in Michigan gives you the ability to critically compare what we are studying in class with what is happening in our state.
