Many school threats end up being bluffs, but there is still a lingering fear after a school threat gets announced, causing students to fear going to school. According to, "National School Safety and Security Services, "Nine out of 10 times threats may turn out to be false, but no school administrator wants to be number 10" Even though there is a small possibility of the school threats actually having a intention behind them, the fact it may happen is a terrifying fact enough. If a threat has already spread throughout the entire school, the next plan you have to take is making sure the students feel safe.
That's why we propose to enhance the school security systems to ensure the safety of every single student and staff member.
Metal detectors
One way to enhance the safety of the students at school, is by placing metal detectors in crowded areas of the school. Some places the metal detectors would be added would be in the office, library, cafeteria, etc.
Adding metal detectors would help see if the students are carrying any dangerous weapons that need to be confiscated, although, the expenses that this would need would be quite extravagant. One air port metal detector would range from 1,000-2,000 dollars depending on the brand. Considering the size of the school, and the amount of exits, this would rack up over 10,000 dollars easily. Also, considering how metal detectors, detect anything that has metal in it, the detectors could find metal items that aren't even dangerous at all. This could be a waste of time for the staff, and the students trying to also get to class. Adding metal detectors would be a risky and potentially time wasting alternative.
Adding metal detectors would help see if anyone brought a dangerous weapon in the first place. This would help see the danger before it arrives. The best part of solving a problem, is making sure it never happens at all. Many dangerous and deadly school shootings occur in crowded, high density areas, and making sure these weapons never appear in those areas in the first place is the ideal goal. "The mere present of metal detectors alert school authorities about the presence of concealed weapons can act as a physiological deterrent" (Volt. AI). If the shooter knows that they have a high chance of getting caught instantly, they wouldn't even attempt to enter the building in the first place, especially considering the anxiety they must feel just entering an area with metal detectors.
