University of Washington - Seattle Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) can apply to be an Allen School-Affiliated Student Organizations. RSOs with Allen School Affiliation operate in service to the Allen School undergraduate student community. These organizations support the development of our community by offering opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration, exploration of student interests, & social engagement within the Allen School, and provide a unique area of interest not already established by current Allen School teams and programs.
We have four different categories of organizations we support including Affinity, Career & Industry, Community, and Technical. RSOs are designated into a category based on their mission, need for stakeholder engagement, and group structure.
Mission:
Affinity Allen School Student Organizations operate in service of the undergraduate Student Engagement & Access (SEA) Team mission operating within the scope of SEA programming. Their main functions are to advocate for affinity-focused needs within the Allen School, build community for subgroup populations within their affinity focus, and enhance their affinity population’s experience within the Allen School. Additions/exceptions to the scope of mission for these groups must be approved by the SEA Team. Each Affinity group RSO is open to all Allen School undergraduate students independent of identity.
Qualifications:
100% Allen School member base.
Executive Leadership (Chair/Vice Chair) positions to be held by Allen School students only
Must have an Allen School faculty or staff member as an adviser.
Mission:
Career & Industry Allen School Student Organizations exist to connect students to the professional field of computer science & engineering. Their main functions are to prepare students for post-collegiate life, develop career-related programming and support, and work in conjunction with the Allen School Industry Affiliates Program. Career & Industry RSOs will work closely with the Allen School Director of External Relations.
Qualifications:
At least 80% Undergraduate member base.
At least 60% Allen School member base.
Leadership team consisting of at least 25% Allen School students.
Must have a professional UW staff or faculty member as an adviser.
Mission:
Community Allen School Student Organizations operate in service of the Allen School undergraduate student community. Their main functions are to engage the student body socially, provide opportunities to develop community, and enhance the general student sense of belonging within the Allen School. Programming is intended for the entire undergraduate student population.
Qualifications:
100% Allen School member base
Executive Leadership (Chair/Vice Chair) positions to be held by Allen School students only.
Will have an assigned Allen School faculty or staff member as an adviser.
Mission:
Technical Allen School Student Organizations function to work on computer science & engineering-focused projects and programs. Their main functions are to host project-based programs directly related to computer science and/or engineering, and to connect Allen School students with opportunities to explore technical aspects of experiential learning.
Qualifications:
At least 80% Undergraduate member base.
At least 60% Allen School member base.
Leadership team consisting of at least 25% Allen School students.
Must have a professional UW staff or faculty member as an adviser.
RSOs that are accepted as Allen School-Affiliated Student Organizations can expect support in the following ways from the Allen School:
Access to the Student Groups Closet with shared event resources (Each RSO will have one officer who has a key to the space)
Approval to reserve the Bill & Melinda Gates Center Classrooms up to 5 times per quarter for free
Approval for up to 1 weekly officer meeting space per week (subject to availability)
Ability to request Allen School Event Spaces (subject to approval)
$1500 in Funding for each Allen School Affiliated Student Organization
Monthly All-Hands meeting with Leadership Training & Development
Marketing on Allen School Website
Ability to advertise to the Allen School Community (Weekly Ed Board Newsletter, Flyers)
Invitation to participate in relevant Allen School Major Programming (Student Activities Fair, Admitted Student Day)
Computing-related RSOs and RSOs whose mission is to create community for Allen School students may apply to become Affiliated with the Allen School. The affiliation application is open on an annual basis (due on June 1st). All RSOs must apply to re-affiliate with the Allen School even if they were affiliated previously. Late applications are not accepted.
All Allen School-Affiliated Student Organizations must be established as a UW Registered Student Organization (RSO). The HUB issues annual deadlines for groups to register, and your group is responsible for meeting the program deadlines from the HUB independent of the Allen School processes.
