CPS De-Escalation Module
Understanding Crisis Behavior & De-Escalation Techniques
This asynchronous module (required for Units A/B/E) was developed for CPS educators by CPS trainers who are certified in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques. It is intended to strengthen your capacity to understand and support positive behaviors in your schools and classrooms - and to more effectively address challenging behaviors and crisis situations.
It is an expectation that all Unit A/B/E members will complete the module by the end of the school year.
Goals of this Module
By the end of this module, you will have a better understanding of:
The underlying factors that affect your behavior and the behavior of others;
Crucial elements of a supportive environment;
Identifying triggers and signals that lead to crisis situations;
Power struggles and how to avoid them;
De-escalation techniques;
Responding to crisis situations; and
Knowing when - and how - to use three main strategies:
Wait strategy,
Prompt strategy, and
Help strategy.
How to Complete the Module
This asynchronous module includes two components and a brief feedback survey:
A 48-minute training video; and
An online Participant Response Form.
A 2-3 minute Exit ticket - Please complete this brief feedback survey after you have completed the module. Your feedback will help us develop more helpful and responsive professional learning experiences in the future.
The Participant Response Form will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of key concepts and strategies from the training video. Upon completion of the Participant Response Form, you will be instructed on how to print and submit your results to your supervisor in order to verify your completion of the module.
It is highly recommended that you open the video and the Participant Response Form in two different browser tabs. You can watch the video by opening the link above and watching it online. When the video prompts you to pause for a comprehension check, you can toggle to the Participant Response Form to answer the questions for that section. You may re-watch any part of the video you need. This video includes four (4) comprehension checks. Please note that some of the comprehension questions on this form differ slightly from the questions featured in the video.
You must respond earn a score of 80% or higher on the comprehension checks (earning at least 16 of 20 possible points) in order to receive credit for completing the module. You can re-watch any section of the video and re-take the quiz as many times as necessary until you reach the 80% requirement.
