This upcoming Fourth of July, though seemingly far away, will be a memorable one. Unlike other July fourth celebrations, this year is the semiquincentennial or half quincentennial of the signing of the declaration of independence. This means that this Fourth of July will mark a quarter millennium of the existence of the United States of America. This is not the first major milestone that has been celebrated by the nation. For the 50th anniversary of the nation, no big celebratory event was held, but the second president, John Adams, and the third president, Thomas Jefferson, both passed away that day, just hours apart from each other, becoming the first 2 presidents to die on the fourth of July.
In 1876, the nation’s centennial was celebrated by the Philadelphia Exposition on orders of President Ulysses S. Grant. The exposition was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Grants, along with the emperor and empress of Brazil, opened the event. President Grant and the Brazilian emperor opened the event by starting the Corliss steam engine, which powered all the exhibits. Philadelphia would also host the sesquicentennial exposition commemorating 150 years since the signing of the declaration of independence and it would also double as the 1926 world's fair and was attended by president Cololige.
The exposition The Bicentennial of 1976 had the american freedom train where the southern Pacific Daylight steam locomotive and other locomotives pulled a train consisting of modified box cars containing original copies of documents like the declaration of independence and George Washington's personal copy of the constitution as well as other items like Judy Garland's wizard of Oz dress, Alan Shepard’s space suit and Martin Luther King Jr’s pulpit and robes.
For this milestone, much has been planned by the state, local, and federal governments. On the federal level, the nation's 250th birthday celebrations are being planned by the America 250 commission, which is a congressional committee set up in 2016 to plan for the 250th celebration and is headed by Rosie Rios, a former treasurer under the Obama administration. The other committee, which is taking part, is called the America 250 task force, which was created by President Trump on January 29th, 2025, and is part of the Department of Defense. This committee is headed by President Trump and Vice President Vance and is the one that organized the 250th celebration of the US Army in June of 2025.
The United States Mint, as it did for the bicentennial and both Philadelphia expositions, is releasing commemoratives. For this celebration, they are releasing semi-quincentennial coins with special designs that can be found both in circulation and in mint sets. There are several different quarter designs, and only one of them has George Washington on it, the return of the liberty dime design, which has not been on the 10-cent coin since 1945. The big thing with the coins is the return of the penny, which will be as a not intended for circulation coin (NIFC), and you can buy them on the US Mint website. Similar to the second American Freedom Train in 1976, the Union Pacific Railroad is running a steam locomotive excursion with its steam locomotive number 4014. The excursion will have the locomotive first go to the west coast and then come east to Scranton and Buffalo. Several other of the railroads' locomotives will be painted in special paint schemes for the event, most notably locomotive 1776 and locomotive 4547, which was built in partnership with Wabtec and celebrated the current US president. On July third of this year, the president is set to open the official half-quintennial festivities at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines and announce the patriot games. Besides the patriot games, there is also a UFC match on the South lawn of the White House on President Trump’s birthday (June 14th) and is being held in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday. The fight will include fighters such as Sean O'Malley and Alex Pereira, and the arena will host lightweight and heavyweight championship fights.
Other initiatives that are being planned are a national garden of American Heroes, A great American road trip on Route 66, and the creation of a time capsule that will be buried on the fourth of July in Philadelphia and is set to be dug up for the 500-year anniversary. In Philadelphia, the city wants to recruit people for a parade, in Boston, new monuments will be going up, and the state of Arizona will transport its Liberty Bell replica to all 15 counties in the state for display purposes. On Long Island and in the city, there are many events. Some of the more notable ones are the Honor Project taking place at the Long Island National Cemetery on Memorial Day, hikes through state parks where you can do things like look at the contributions of African Americans, Native Americans, and do activities like explore the changes to the American flag. In NYC, there will be an event called the Sail4th 250 Parade of Sail, where class B and A sailing ships will float around New York Harbor. The class B ships will sail down the East River to Gravesend Bay, and the Class A ships will sail past the Brooklyn Bridge to Governors Island.
