What To Expect This Upcoming Season For The Chicago Bears
By: Zaid Khan
These past couple of months included a lot of change for the Bears especially in the front office and coaching staff. After the Bears season ended their season with a 6-11 record, the owners of the Bears, the Mccaskey’s, had decided to fire former Head Coach Matt Nagy and former GM Ryan Pace. The team did not waste any time, and after a couple of weeks decided to hire Ryan Poles as the General Manager and eventually hired Matt Eberflus as the new Head Coach. With new faces leading the Bears, this team is bound to have a lot of changes. I am going to go into the changes so far the Bears have made these past couple of months and how it helps for the future.
The new General Manager’s immediate impact:
About two months ago, Ryan Poles made the big decision to trade Khalil Mack to the Chargers in exchange for a 2022 second round pick and a 2023 6th round pick. At first, fans were very shocked to hear that the face of the defense in Khalil Mack was being traded, but after a while the fans understood the reason behind the huge trade. The Bears are freeing up as much cap space as they can for the future. Ryan Poles continued to make more moves including cutting RB Tarik Cohen and most recently Nick Foles. The Bears currently have 16 million dollars in cap space but will have 96.3 million dollars in cap space next year. That sets up the Bears to have the most amount of money to use in the NFL next season. So in the end, while it is sad that multiple players this off-season will not be on the team, it helps prepare for the future and gives the Bears the opportunity to acquire great players next season.
Why you should not be worried about the decision-making of Ryan Poles:
Bears fans might not like how the current roster looks, but the reality is that the Bears are in a much better position with the front office and coaching staff than what it was last season. Right now, Ryan Poles is focused on building a team for the future and building the best possible team around Justin Fields. Poles is not trying to make the Bears a win now team, but the goal is to be a contending team every year for the Lombardi trophy because if you want a team that will contend for many years, rebuilding is the best option for this Bears team.
What to expect this upcoming season:
If you are expecting the Bears to be a contending team and be a favorite to make the playoffs, I would tell you to consider changing your expectations. While the Bears have one of the easiest schedules this upcoming season, this season is not meant to be an impressive season. The goal of this season is to build an offense that compliments Justin Fields and helps him to be the best possible version of himself. This season is essentially meant to be a developmental season with the new coaching staff and very different roster from years prior. So I say this to all Bears fans, patience is key for this upcoming season if you want to have a contending team for the future. So I tell you all, let's be patient and trust what Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus are building here.
