Roe V. Wade; The Ongoing Debate on Abortion Rights
By: Anastasia Berrios
It was decided in 1973 that women had the right to privacy and therefore protected the right to safe abortions.
Due to the surfacing of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. 's nearly 100 page draft, speaking on fetal development; this case has been reopened in the Supreme Court and is currently in debate once again with the likely possibility of the decision being overturned and those with a uterus could lose their right to their own bodily autonomy.
Regardless of your own personal opinion on abortions, anyone with a uterus must have the choice to do what is best for themselves. I personally fear for the people who will have to go to any kind of physical and mental length to illegally have an abortion if this case is overturned. We are lucky enough to live in Illinois which allows us to have certain privileges, such as the guaranteed right to abortion, that many other states and people in the US won’t have access to. For the people who have been fighting for the rights to their own bodies since they could remember, I’m so sorry for the regression of the progress that you worked so hard to make.
To all those who think ill of abortions, do not have one. It’s as simple as that. This is your prerogative and no one and nothing should infringe upon that, though you must agree that this mentality must go both ways.
Which is why, what you cannot do is make choices for other people regarding something that you cannot fully understand, whether you have a uterus or not. We must collectively decide to continue to fight for our rights, for the ones that came before us and for those who will come after because we the people, have the power to do so.
