LPHS 2022- College Admissions in a Nutshell
By: Alejandro Ceron
Summertime is here! For many seniors, their first choice or otherwise known as their ‘dream college’ became a reality for them. Although, with the rise of qualified applicants to the nation’s most prestigious schools, it became increasingly difficult for students to get accepted into these top schools.
Christian Loza, a current senior at Lincoln Park who will be attending The University of Michigan this Fall shared his thoughts on making his decision, “My biggest challenge was honestly choosing what college I wanted to go to. I had to decide between UIUC and the University of Michigan which was extremely hard because both are great schools. It literally ate me up for the entire month of April until I had to decide by May 1st. What made me think about committing to the University of Michigan was the distance, it was always my dream to go to a big prestigious out-of-state university. This especially made me want to go because it was actually affordable for my family. My major also played a huge role, since I am not entirely sure of what I want to do. I knew that Michgian offered way more top programs than UIUC did.” Although Loza’s first choice school, Northwestern did not accept him, he can now put it behind him, “ I think it was a good thing though. I can still always transfer or go to grad school at that university if I want to go. I think I need the out-of-state experience to really feel like I’m moving on to the next chapter of my life. So, I’m not really upset about it. I think the University of Michigan was the best decision for me.”
Senior Crystal Becerra who will attend the University of Illinois Chicago in the Fall offered advice to rising seniors, “Don’t fall behind (in the college process). You can miss out on a lot of scholarships! Use your counselor as a resource! Also, it’s very important to give yourself time with your essay–time to look back at them and have other people look at them too.”
Sometimes choosing a university that fits your best interests becomes very challenging. Students should feel free to reach out to any LPHS school counselor for advice on their college journey. According to those LPHS students who just finished the admissions process, it is never too early to start!
The Paw Print wishes everyone a fantastic summer! Congrats to the Class of 2022 and good luck on college admissions Class of 2023!
