Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1973 prohibits public institutions of higher education from discriminating against persons with disabilities. At the post-secondary level, higher education institutions must make suitable academic accommodations and provide auxiliary aids and services that are needed for the individual with a disability, so they can have equal access and opportunity to participate within the institution.
ADA makes it possible for more persons with disabilities to attend and graduate from college, thus resulting in better post-secondary outcomes. However, it is important that educators make their students aware of the supports and services located on each public campus, to ensure students are getting the accommodations they are eligible for.
Below is a brief lesson to incorporate into your classroom, prior to a college trip, to teach students on the shift from high school to college, dual enrollment documents, and useful links for accessing supports for colleges within the City of Chicago.
