Fringe Vocabulary words are often very motivating. For example, a motivating item can help a nonverbal child learn to request using a combination of body language, pointing, gestures, pictures, and verbalization. Though initially a good intervention strategy often the nonverbal child becomes "stuck" only requesting motivating items and not learning how to communicate for multiple reasons (e.g. commenting, protesting). In addition, a focus on Fringe Vocabulary limits sentence development. Sentences cannot be composed of only Fringe Vocabulary words.
