PODD stands for Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display.
Pragmatic is the use of language for social interaction.
Organization refers to the systematic arrangement of words and symbols.
Dynamic Display is changing pages.
A system developed by Gayle Porter, a speech pathologist, in Australia to address the needs of students with complex communication needs.
A way of organizing extensive whole word and symbol vocabulary into a book or speech generating device.
Dependent upon consistent and large-scale modeling of the vocabulary system across multiple settings, topics, and communication partners to aid language development for students with complex communication needs.
Designed to be just one "tool" in different methods (multi-modal) a student uses to communicate.
Each PODD Communication book is formatted dependent upon the individual student's physical, sensory, and communication needs (i.e. direct select, alternative access including eye gaze and partner assisted scanning).
The PODD Communication Book must be readily available at all times so a communication partner can talk to the student using the symbols.
In the beginning a student can touch symbols on a page, but unless he/she can independently and efficiently turn pages or easily direct navigation verbally the communication partner turns the pages of the PODD Communication Book. This decreases the motor and cognitive load on the student and helps the student focus on generating the message.
The communication always starts on the first page of the PODD Communication Book with the verbal/physical initiation (i.e. raise hand to indicate "I have something to say").
Watch this video example of direct selection with the PODD system and notice how the communication partner navigates the book so the child can focus on his message.
In this video Harper is using direct select but mom is shaping "I have something to say."
Notice how mom models the use of the system to help Harper clarify her message.
Check out Harper's growth in using the PODD system.
In this video the PODD system is being accessed through Partner Assisted Scanning using a Column Scanning book.
