The Core Vocabulary Exchange System was developed as a low tech system that combines core vocabulary and picture exchange. Its purpose is to help students develop functional language beyond the communication functions of traditional picture exchange, which teaches requesting (i.e. "I want") and labeling (i.e. "I see"). Because the CVES teaches reciprocity of language through exchange of icons, students learn communication occurs between themselves and a partner. The system is meant to be a bridge to a voice output communication device or to expand the verbal abilities of a child who is already developing some verbal language. Additionally, it can be used within the classroom as a support to model language during group activities.
*The CVES incorporates elements of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), however is a separate system. Because it is not a formalized behavior modification system, training is not required.
1. Creating a two-way exchange of information
2. Encourages Spontaneous Novel Utterance Generation (SNUG)
3. Promotes motor automaticity- icons are in a consistent location
4. Targets multiple functions of language (requesting, protesting, commenting, directing, etc.)
5. Aided Language Input - pairs meaning with each symbol
6. Aids in behavioral regulation

Contact the AAC itinerant from your network if interested in trialing this system. The team (classroom teacher and speech-language pathologist) will work with the itinerant to set goals for a trial as well as collect data on the variety of targeted vocabulary your students are using.
