Students using high tech AAC systems, whether that be iPad based applications or a dedicated device, should always have a low tech, paper based version of their system available. These can be used:
- If the high tech device is broken or sent for repair, or while it is charging
- During activities where the high tech device cannot be used, such as by the pool, or when risk of breaking the device is high, such as during gym class
- For modeling within the classroom. Additional low tech classroom supports can be created using each AAC device company's respective software
- For a student with complex communication needs (i.e. physical impairment) becomes fatigued or has difficulty accessing his dedicated AAC system

Each device company has FREE downloadable software that can be used to create low tech books, boards, and classroom supports for adaptations to curricular materials or modeling. Although the download is free, there may be restrictions on your CPS computer that prevent you from installing software. If this is the case, contact your school's technology support personnel for assistance downloading.
