The PECS teaching protocol is based on B.F. Skinner’s book, Verbal Behavior, and broad spectrum applied behavior analysis. Specific prompting and reinforcement strategies that will lead to independent communication are used throughout the protocol. The protocol also includes systematic error correction procedures to promote learning if an error occurs. Verbal prompts are not used, thus building immediate initiation and avoiding prompt dependency. PECS targets the language function of requesting, and in later phases, commenting.
The primary purpose of PECS is to teach independent initiation of communication. Additionally, it teaches that communication must occur in an exchange between the student and a partner.

NOTE: "PECS" refers to a specific protocol used to teach communication systematically through a series of phases. If pictures are being used in the classroom to support communication but the exact protocol is not being followed, this is not considered "PECS".
More detailed information on teaching the PECS phases can be found in the PECS Manual provided during PECS training.
PHASE I Single picture exchange for highly motivating items
PHASE II Traveling to exchange a single picture and persisting in communication
PHASE IIIA Discriminating between preferred and non preferred items
PHASE IIIB Discriminating between preferred items
PHASE IV Construct and exchange sentence strip, i.e. "I want + item"
ATTRIBUTES Requesting specific items with size, color, shape
PHASE V Maintaining spontaneous requesting
PHASE VI Commenting

When PECS is recommended for a student, the student's teacher and speech pathologist should be formally trained in PECS to ensure the system is implemented with fidelity. There are a couple options for getting trained:
1. ODLSS hosts PECS training several times a year. Teachers should contact their Special Education Administrator (SEA) to inquire about reserving a spot in training. Speech pathologists should contact their coordinator.
2. Training is offered through Pyramid, the company that created PECS. Check HERE on their website to search for upcoming training dates in the Chicago area.
