How Does Time Affect Car Accidents in Ward Two?
Focusing on the overall pattern in the time of day car crashes are most common, to see if there is a clear pattern in when car accidents are happening in ward two and therefore when is it most dangerous time of day to drive in ward two due to an increase in car accidents was a main focus. First looking at time of day throughout the year, by graphing the amount of crashes per hour in 2024, it was found that there is a large spike in crashes between 5 pm and 8 pm, as seen to the right.
Using this data a data frame was then made for mapping the data. Specifically mapping where these crashes were happening during this increase in crashes within ward two. It was found that between the time of 3 pm to 7 pm there were clear hot spots in the ward where crashes had taken place, as seen to the right.
Additionally looking into whether this pattern changes within the summer months. First graphing the summer between the dates June 1st and September 1st for crashes within ward two. This shows that there was an increase in crashes again at 5 pm to 8 pm, seen above.
From this it was investigated on whether this is a repeating pattern throughout the years an overlapping graph was made for the years 2024, 2021, and 2019. From this it was found that the increase in traffic accidents between the time 5 pm and 8 pm is constant throughout the years in ward two, as seen above.
From this finding the focus shifted to mapping both the increase in car accidents during this period of time in the day and the areas that nightlife in the summer affects. From this it was found that there is a substantial amount of car crashes near the lake both for nightlife and the overall peak in crashes during the day, however crashes during the peak accident times are more throughout the ward while crashes for nightlife are more concentrated near the lake.
A focus was the lighting aspect of “time.” This included times of day (dusk, dawn, darkness and darkness no lighting). By finding the count values for every district in each year 2015-2023 a general trend of when the most crashes occur and if those times of days are becoming more frequent over time was found. Overall, there wasn’t a large difference in crashes at night time overall, crashes tended to increase some years and decrease in others. However, the overall crashes at night on LIGHTED ROADS skyrocketed in 2023, suggesting that nighttime crashes are becoming more of an issue. Therefore investing in street lighting could be useful. Overall crashes in daytime are much more common. Based on these findings, street lighting shouldn’t be a priority. There were some issues figuring what information would be actually relevant but overall it was concluded that lighting wasn’t a main point of concern.
Another focus was on if there are higher crash rates during holidays. First data was analyzed by the biggest holidays of the year. What was found is that Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, and Labor Day all have an increase in crash rates. While Halloween and New Years eve does not increase, in fact it decreases., seen to the right. This suggests that these are holidays in which streets are less busy and therefore is not a point of concern. However a focus on street safety during Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, and Labor Day is suggested.
Focused on crash data during sports seasons such as the Bears during 2024. This is because the Bears had a lot of hype in 2024 due to the drafting of Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze. However, trying to display exact dates was a lot of work and very annoying. Furthermore, the sports season is basically all year in Chicago because multiple sports are playing throughout the entire year. This is when it was decided to focus more on specific seasons to compare the crash types that were more popular in certain seasons. Furthermore this would provide an abundant amount of information on what is causing the most problems in the 2nd Ward and hopefully lead to possible solutions to limit accidents making it safer. Results showed that crash types such as rear-end, sideswipe same direction, and parked motor vehicle were some of the most common. (Graphs found below)
