Our Lane Tech data science class is analyzing reports of accident data compiled from across the city to examine trends and to specifically offer feedback to the 2nd Ward Office of Alderman Brian Hopkins.
All 32 students in the class are collaborating on this group project, breaking down into teams to address different issues such as identifying common times of accidents, looking for areas of high-incidence for pedestrian accidents, and mapping. Students are exploring data from across the city through the Chicago Data Portal.
The 2nd Ward Office is supporting our class as a “data client.” Students asked for issues that might be of particular interest and were given intersections and special attention upon pedestrians due to the large volume of foot traffic in the ward and analyzed trends to make data-supported discoveries and recommendations to the ward.
The class will present their findings to the Alderman at City Hall on Tuesday May 20th. Student leaders are organizing and managing the project as a way of applying their data analytics skills in an authentic way that can help the community.
