As this primary muscle of mastication, this muscle is responsible for closing the mouth by contracting the mandible. Point of origin is the maxilla and point of insertion is the mandible.

This muscle is another muscle of mastication that is necessary for side to side movement. Originating from the pterygoid bone as stated in its name, this muscle inserts into the mandible.
As the last major muscle of mastication, this muscle originates from the fossa of the temporal bone, and inserts at the coronoid process of the mandible. Similar to the other muscles of mastication the m. temporalis aids in closing the jaw through contraction.

The m. digastricus contracts to open the jaw and relaxes to close it. Point of origin is at the temperomandibular joint, and point of insertion is at the medial aspect of the mandible.

This muscle allows the floor of the oral cavity to move along with the tongue. It is one of the muscles of the tongue and considered an extrinsic muscle. It is located between each ramus of the mandible.
The genioglossus muscle functions to stick the tongue out which is primary for prehension. It lines the portion of the mouth from the base of the tongue to the rostral section of the mandible.
Opposite from m. genioglossus, this muscle brings the tongue back into the oral cavity and makes up the portion from the base of the tongue to the hyoid apparatus.
This muscle is circular and found within the lip where it is responsible for closing the mouth. It originates from the maxilla and mandible and inserts at the skin/membrane of the lips.
Necassary for the occurence of the flehmen response, this muscle originates at the maxilla and inserts at the upper lip.

The levator nasolabialis muscle originates at the nasal bone and into the nose/lip area. Contraction of this muscle pulls on the nose and lip edges.

Contraction of this muscle allows nostrils to flare up as it originates from the maxilla and inserts at the nares.
The m. zygomaticus contracts to pull the lip to a lateral motion. Point of origin is at the m. masseter, and point of insertion is at the lateral angle of the lips.

These are the muscles of the cheek that move food between the tongue and teeth in the mouth during mastication. Origin is at aspects of both the mandible and maxilla. This muscle inserts at the lips int he direction of the mandible and maxilla.

This circular muscle surrounds the eyelid and allows the eyelid to close. The major point of origin is at the nasal portion of the frontal bone, where it will then insert into the skin of the orbital region of the eye.
