Origin: Sternum (Xiphoid process), caudal ribs, lumbar vertebrae
Insertion: Central tendon
Function: Contractions flatten diaphragm and increase volume of thoracic cavity (inhalation)

Exhalation (decrease volume of thoracic cavity), fibers are ventral and cranial between ribs
external intercostal
external intercostal
Inhalation (increase volume of thoracic cavity), fibers are ventral and caudal between ribs
