The liver has many functions. It removes and recycles erythrocytes and produces bile. Bile contains bile salts, cholesterol, phospholipids, and bilirubin. Bile is vital for the emulsification of lipids.
The common hepatic duct connects with the cystic duct to form the common bile duct. The hepatic ducts flow bile out of the liver to either the intestine or the gallbladder.
The common bile duct carries bile from both the liver and the gallbladder and delivers it to the intestine.
